Hello, first off this is my first post here on the forums. I have been collecting on and off for a while and what I collect mostly are us sets in danscos. I have went through most recent coin types, mostly after 1880's or so, but haven't got a jefferson bu/proof set yet. I almost always get my complete/almost complete sets off of ebay and upgrade a little after that. If anyone has any advice on buying a set like this I would really appreciate it. Thanks a bunch.

Howdy Ryan11 - Welcome to the Forum !!

I know you're a new member and not familiar with the Forum rules - but offers to buy, sell or trade are not permitted on Coin Talk except in the Open Forum and only after a member has made 10 posts. That's why I edited your post.

    Hi Ryan
I would email Danscos and seee if they have made a new page for the next dates...I think they do that it will just depend if they have yet.

I would buy a set in person and not off ebay because you get to see the coins better.

Make sure that nobody puts a fake 1950-D nickel in that hole.

Thanks for the advice so far. As for the ebay thing, it would seem to me that that way would be the cheapest as I have went to coin shops and they charge a ton of money. Any thoughts?

And for the new page on the jefferson dansco, I can't find their email address on their webpage. Any ideas?

Ebay CAN be cheaper but it also can be bad...there are some sellers out there that would LOVE to rip someone off...at a dealers you can see what you are getting.
I'm looking for dansco and am not having any luck either...I'm sure someone here will know more than I will so hang in there.

    nickels

As cheap as 1950D nickels are now it must be a desparate hombre to go to the trouble to fake one!

Well...its not that they will fake one now but bank in the few years past 1950 a LOT of fakes came out and some still may be around.

As for that update page, do we know for sure what the mint is going to do for 2006 and on. Are they doing these new nickels for two years and then just going back to the old design again for a while. I just don't want to buy two update pages and go through the hassle. Thanks for the help.

Well right now the law says that the nickel in 2006 will have an image of Jefferson on the obverse and an image of Monticello on the reverse - from then til the end of time. And no I'm not kidding.

Now the law can be changed - but it will literally take an act of Congress to do it.

Okay, so what percentage are we talking about that the nickel won't change until after 2012? 75%, 95%, 99.99%...

    As I said - the current law says it's 100% - forever.

Now if you're asking what the chances are they'll change the law at some point - I'd say pretty good. That's what Congress gets paid to do after all. If they stop changing laws - well they're out of a job

And we all know THAT aint gonna happen

Of course you need to realize - until 2004 - the nickel had not changed since 1938. Let's see - that was 66 yrs. The quarter had not changed since 1932 until 1999 - 67 yrs. The obverse of the cent is pushing a 100 yrs - the half dollar 41 yrs - the dime 59 yrs.

And you're wondering whether the nickel design will last unchanged for 5 1/2 yrs ?
