I was in the local coin/currency shop today. He just scored big at an estate sale. Supposedly, there is 4 complete sets of web notes in the buy. He pulled one out to show me. He had already sent it to PMG for grading and it came back CH UNC 66. It was a 1988A F* note. He is asking $3,000 for it. What are your comments on this price? Thanks.
4 complete sets? thats kind of cool! especially since there are a few of the more rare 19988-A web notes that are known to be unique (so far anyway). So if he did pick up 4 complete sets - WOW! As for the price of the F* ... being the condition its in, and graded .... it could be in the right ball park. I dont get to buy pieces like that - ever lol - so i could be waaaay off.
A complete set of webs would certainly be amazing. The F=* is certainly desirable but webs are not as hot as they once were. $3000 seems kind of high to me but I could be totally wrong. I'd suggest doing some research by finding dealers (on line) that sell webs. Ask their opinion.
Dan...with you being "King of the 295 Notes" I think you would have the best opinion on these for sure! RickieB
Going on memory with the webs RickieB. I have the web note book from 2001 and it lists a CU F-* at $1500. I also remember seeing the same being offered at times on ebay for just that. I also feel that CU is NOT an uncommon grade for the note as people have a tendency to keep star notes before any other. This can be seen with the 1995 G-* 295 error. VERY few examples are known but all seem to be higher grade. This was before a lot of slabbing was going on and web notes (and yes even 295s) were much hotter. I'm thinking maybe $2000 but without a lot of them being offered (quite scarce after all) it's hard to tell. clembo
Dan... now that is the Great Information I knew you had to know!! Great post Sir...thank you... Best regards, RickieB
Thanks for the kudos Rickie. Got a bit more information today while looking some stuff up at work. In the Standard Catalog of United States Paper Money by Krause Publications (27th edition) it lists a CU65 F-* at $1200. Great book by the way but it's really making me think that $3000 for that note is overkill and then some. We've been slabbing a lot of paper at work and often letting it go for as low as half of catalog.
