Hello, Hope everyone is doing well. Finished going through many rolls of Jeffs. recently picked up. Found a few keepers; namely 2 55-d/s and a double mont. 39 (see attached picture). I've been searching for this one for a long long time, was wondering if I'd ever find one. I also found 71 41-s's of which 12 were the Large S variety and 1 of which I believe is the upsidedown s variety. I also found 1 48-s which is different from the other 33 48-s's found (see attachment). I know Breen says something about 2 varieties for this date but says the lesser variety accounts for 15% of the strikes; if this is that variety I wonder how accurate that is as it only accounts for 1/33 of the 48-s's I have found. I also noticed a difference is some of the 48-D's I found (see attachment); mainly one looks quite abit larger than the other- does anyone know if there is the large and small mint mark variety for the date and mint? I also found an odd 41-s nickel with something going on; can't figure if it's some kind of clash or not (see pic); some the the dark areas resemble letters a little-anyone have any idea?
Pick: First, welcome to the forum Next: nice catch on that 1939 DDR! As for the 1941 S, agreed, it is wierd. Something is going on there.
I believe the 39 is type one; it has wide seperation of monticello and five cents- my scanner once again isn't picking up all the detail that is present-it was pretty obvious at first glance under my lense-I had begun to wonder if I knew what to look for as I've probably searched 300 39-p's before finding one. I'd say it probably only grades around fine but still very happy to have gotton in a roll. Just a quick thought again with regard s mint variations from 46-48; I checked Breen again and he says there's also a 47-s variety that doesn't have the trumpted/ seriffs- I've found many 46-s without seriffs, the 1 48-s (out of 33) but have yet to find a 47-s without and I must have about 80 of that year and mint.
For the years 46-48 I can only find a total of 2 mintmark types used. Since mintmarks were hand punched back then, I would guess that there are others. The 2 I find listed are: Sans Serif Type - Used in 1946 and 1948 Trumpet Tail Type - 1941 and then 1946-1949 Wiles says that these are the only two types used. If you have others you could send them to him and let him check them out, but I would doubt there would be much, if any, added value. Speedy
Your 1939 DDR is definitely FS-022, not the lesser variety 022.5. That's a fantastic find. I can't tell you how many thousands of 1939 nickels I've looked at, trying to cherry that. I finally just broke down and bought one, but I'm sure I'll keep looking anyway.
I cherried one years ago, cost: 25 cents, VG! Just checked: F= 35 cents VG= $1.00 VG $7.00 VG= .05 VG= $5.00
