weird quarter

I recently found a new Texas quarter in a roll of quarters. It was slightly larger than the rest. On the front, instead of quarter dollar, it says "close quarters." On the back it has a picture of a cowboy on horseback trying to lasso what looks like Osama Bin Laden. Everything else is the same as a regular quarter with "In God We Trust," United States of America, etc.
My questions is - is this a counterfeit quarter or what? It does work in a vending machine.

    Thanks for any help.

Probably an "adjusted" quarter or a Dan Carr piece. Would love to see a pic.

It is a parody quarter - several designs have been made and more are currecntly being produced. Most of these are struck over real quarters, so that explains why yours works in a vending machine. It is slightly oversized but the weight and metal compostion are authentic.

You spent it in a vending machine instead of keeping it?

He probably put it in the machine, it accepted it, and then he pushed the coin return and got it back.

Second possibility is he got it back in change from a vending machine and he thinks that means it works in the machine when actually it only means that it was in the change the operator loaded into the machine for making change.
