Got these at the coin shop yesterday. 1925-S Buffalo nickel was $3, 1892 Columbian Expo for $11, and the 1957 washington for $1. The washington has full mint luster and the Columbian Expo half has some too. What would you grade some of these at? Sorry about the pictures of the Washington... the reverse is in the second post.
Good buys IMO, any time you can get a columbian for less than $15 and a nice AU quarter for a buck, you're doing good.
yeah you did really well with the Columbian Half. I find it really difficult to grade Columbian halves, especially since the hairlines are always pretty weak. In any case, I'd say maybe MS, maybe high AU. I could underestimating.
The nickel is G-4, but has some dark junk on the reverse. Still a good buy. I think you overpaid a bit for the Columbian, but still not too bad. The quarter is an absolute steal, considering melt is over $2.
Good catch! The columbian halves I usually pick up are in that price range (from $9 to $12 or so) unless they are really nice. I dont know much about nickels, and for a buck on the quarter, why not? Nice!
Yeah and the pic doesn't do it justice. It's dark brown around the outside on the letters and his face and the fields are golden. I was really excited with my purchase of it.
The buffalo nickel is a solid G-4, I'll pass on the commemorative, and the quarter appears to be AU-50. But not matter what the grade on the quarter it's a steal, because even if it was worn smooth and a clunker, it would be worth two bucks just in the silver bullion content alone. If you can find any silver coinage selling for less than five to six times face value, I'd snap them all up (melt value on silver coins is currently running at around eight times face).
I like the Columbus Half, and even in MS, I seldom see much cartwheel luster, and many tone rather lackluster grey. The detail on the hemispheres and sail on the rev would lead me to grade it AU +/- based on surfaces we can't see too well in the photo. I would be happy to get it for that price. Jim
Nice columbian. It's at least XF and maybe AU, hard to tell from the photo. The 92 seems more difficult to find than the 93.
I thought I was getting a pretty good deal on the Columbian and I took a chance (however small) on the Buffalo nickel.
If that's the case, then what does this person think they're doing? http://www.coinbug.com/1893-columbian-exposition-commemorative-xf40-viewitem_i4924
I was going to make a disparaging remark about the seller of that item, and speculate about illicit substances that he or she may or may not have ingested. Instead, I'll just say that they're being rather optimistic about the value of that piece.
