The state quarters was good , but at the same time bad. It brought a lot of new collectors but it was expensive and time consuming. The state parks are starting to tick me off. I don't want to scramble to find these coins and get them in my book. I don't know though I might just be getting sick of QUARTERS!!!!

Bummer. You don't sound like you are having fun with this hobby.

Coin collecting doesn't have to be expensive or time consuming and if collecting quarters ticks you off or makes you sick, perhaps you could find another hobby.

I collected the quarters, it wasn't expensive because I don't have to have the best coin, just a nice coin. Sure it was time consuming, 10 years is a long time but the time was well spent learning about the new state designs and why they chose the design they did. It was time invested, just not consumed.

I'm eagerly awaiting these new National Park quarters because it's a great was to learn about what this country has to offer. It's odd but coin collecting has never ticked me off or made me sick ..but that's just me. If it ever did, I would find something that I enjoy that wouldn't have those terrible side effects.

    Hope you feel better.

One thing I have to say here is that if you dont like a coin or run of coins then dont collect them, after all that is what this hobby is about is it not? Collecting what you like.
Now I would like to refer back to a earlier comment by Ruben
they're not new designs. They are adaptations of the old designs
What old designs are they based on Ruben?? As far as I was aware all the state quarters are new designs, same for the parks. Perhaps I am wrong on this if so I am sure you can point me in the right direction :thumb:

I think part of the reason the State Quarters Program was such a success was the fact that nothing had really changed in our circulating coins in decades. I remember back in the 1980's wondering when we'd get a new design in coinage. Be careful what you wish for! Now they've just given us more than necessary. The coin they should give a makeover, the dime, just keeps getting produced year after boring year. I'm not saying four different busy designs every year. I think a new reverse would work for the next twenty years. Quarters could get a reverse depicting a great accoplishment of George Washington and leave that for a couple decades. As for the prez dollars, wait until the series runs its course. Then when the surplus is finally used up in 2312, they can find a single design that will also work for more than three months.

Washingotn is the identifying part of the quarter. It is a 72 year old design

So you want washington off the quarters then Ruben? as for it been the identifying part of the coin I would question that assumption. How can you tell which coin is a New Mexico quarter and which is a Alaskan from looking at Washingtons head?

Giving it further consideration I think your right.

Why should we give kudos to the mint and Moy? The Congress passed it at Bush signed it. (it was the last bill he signed as president except for the TARP extentsion) The mint didn't want this, they didn't need this, and it was a major mistake.

Canada usually has between one and five circulating commem. quarters every year. That might be good, as there's the regular design as well, but this? come on!

I am sure the State quarters gave non collectors some new things to talk about.
22 years though is a long time to have new themes for designs on the quarters. I think limiting it to a year or two is long enough. Anything longer is just overwhelming for all.

Neither is a New Mexico or an Alaska quarter; they both are Washington quarters. Ruben was right (yeah, really!) before he changed his mind, the identifying part of the coin is the obverse design.

    • Pre 1959 and post 1958 Cents are all Lincoln Cents.
    • Shield Nickels are Shield Nickels with, or without rays
    • Liberty Nickels are Liberty Nickels with, or without CENTS
    • Jefferson Nickels are Jefferson Nickels with Monticello, a Peace Medal, a Keelboat, A Bison or an Ocean
    • A Capped Bust quarter remains the same even with the motto removed from the obverse
    • Seated Liberty Quarters, Halves and Dollars have various additions or removals of mottos and rays and retain the Seated Liberty designation

Granted, most of these changes are minor compared to the complete resdesign of the obverse, but the principle is there - the obverse designates the design although the reverse design can be used as a terminological modifier.

So, you can have an Shield Nickel with rays vs a Shield Nickel without rays; Or you can have a Capped Bust Quarter with motto or without motto; Or you can have a Seated Liberty Dollar with or without motto.

Or you can have a Washington quarter with New Mexico reverse or a Washington quarter with an Alaska reverse (or even a Washington quarter with a Washington reverse!).
