Just curious..... I'm not defending the Washington quarter. It's a functional but lackluster design no doubt. But do you really think any modern day 'Miss Liberty', eagle design or star pattern, that didn't resemble one from the past, would satisfy anyone? I'm gonna say no. It would seem that many coin designs are taken for granted and not appreciated until they stop minting them. Then they are seen in a different perspective. Many of the old designs had plenty of critics when they came out.
I'm not following you. Are you saying that if they stopped mint Washington Quarters today that in a decade we would see the beauty in them? Because that aint happening. That design is just ugly, only to be surpassed by the ugliness of the portraits on the Presidential series. Ruben
Ruben it has forever been my opinion that the vast majority of all US coin designs are ugly, some are even beyond ugly. There are but a few that I actually like. The rest - you can keep 'em.
Draped Bust large cent (1796-1807) Indian Head cent (1859-1909) Buffalo nickel (1913-1938) Mercury dime (1916-1945) Walking Liberty half (1916-1947) Franklin Head half (1948-1963) Kennedy Head half (1964-Date) Morgan dollar (1878-1921) Peace dollar (1921-1964) Turban Head gold - all denominations Indian Head gold - all denominations Saint Gaudens $20 gold
You like Franklin's? Are you kidding? Let's change the tread,, Wow, you like franklin's - your other choices are great but Franklin's did you really mean Franklin half dollars?? Kennedy's also?? Wow, I don't know anybody that likes Franklin's and the Kennedy's design is a little "to presidential and modern to say the least but Franklin's?? That's like saying you like Washington Quarters, or Roosevelt dimes or, the worst of all time SBA, Sacs and God forbid the presidential dollars. Let's change the thread - Best & Worst U.S. Coins and Paper money of All Time!!!!!!! Worst in descending order of horrible! 1. SBA Dollars 2. President dollars 3. Sac's 4. All modern currency 5. Franklin Halves 6. Kennedy Halves 7. Washington quarters 8. Roosevelt Dime 9. Barber Coins Best of all time: 1. Oregon Commemorative Half. 2. St. Gaudens Double Eagle 3. Buffalo Nickel 4. Walking Lib Half 5. Standing Lib Quart. 6. Indian Head Cent 7. Classic Head gold. Paper Money: Best 1. Educational Series, all three notes. 2. Large Gold Cert. 3. All Gem 1923 thru 1934 Silver cert. But Franklin's?????????????? Now having said all this which is of course my opinion let's have some fun with it - I hope you know even though I think a Franklin Half is one of the ugliest coins of all times that I'm kind of having fun here - you may like whatever you want of course but Franklins???? Ben Peters
Yes, I like Frankies. Like Kennedy the half too, always have. I knew John Kennedy, perhaps that's why. And just in case you didn't get it - yeah, I like Frankies
I must be the only one here that likes the Washington Quarter. I don't like the new hair on Washington, but I do like the old Washington Quarters. I love the eagle on the reverse and I love President Washington. While he might not be the most handsome man, he was an incredible man.
You cn hijack the thread but lets not change the thread. We've had that thread about a thousand times. Ruben
I had thought about that I had thought you'all probably beat this horse to death long before I got here so I agree: no kidnapping of the thread. But Franklin's - it just boggles what's left of my mind to think some one would have that as their one of their favorites - but after thinking about it I guess a body could like that coin - we still have people who like and or are Republicans so nothing surprises me anymore. Even that there are weapons of mass destruction hiding under somebodies finger nails - so if there are people that bought that lie, hook, line and sinker I guess someone could like Franklin's. I would much rather like Franklin's than be a Republican! Oh. and I forgot about Ike dollars, I put them right there below Franklin's as a horrible coin design. Love the site, but hate Franklin's - but I'd rather be covered in Franklin's than be a republican - that probably would be worse than being a dentist don't you know! Ben (glad I have an opinion) Peters
This post is loaded with all kinds of politics that would normally demand a tit for tat response. Its against forum rules. BTW - I disagree with your analysis of current politics. Ruben
I'll be be careful - I really did not know. I'll be more careful from now on, I didn't know - I just find it hard to believe that anyone would support the aforementioned political party after the past 8 years. Thank God we got them out of there - they were an embarrassment to the human race. I won't say another word - and will censor my comments from now on. Benjamin H. (proud to be an american) Peters III
I think the Washington quarter would have been fine as a one-year type as it was intended back in 1932, but over 75 years of them, blah. As for the Barber series, they are really not a bad looking coin in MS grades but in the condition most folks see them (G/VG), they're just not attractive. My list of faves would include the Saint Gaudens, Indian Eagle, Peace and Morgan Dollars, Walkers, Mercuries, Standing Lib quarters, Indian cents, Flying Eagle cents, Bust halves and 1790's gold. The modern regular issues are nothing more than tired old duds that have been minted for far too long. Some of the state quarter reverses have been interesting, but now there are too many overminted circulating commems out there that the mint is making a fortune off of. Typical of the mint's relentless march to mediocrity was the return to a 70 year old design on the Jefferson nickel reverse. The 2005 Jefferson/Bison nickel would have been a nice replacement. C'est la vie.
