I'm 23 years old, been collecting coins since I was old enough to know what to look for. Still check my change every time I get it to pick out the occasional silver dime or 1959 or old nickel along with the usual wheat pennies. What made me sign up for this is a recent (potential) find. I was browsing ebay for usual silver cents when I came across..a 1965 silver roosevelt dime. I've read before how extremely rare they are and the odds of one showing up on ebay is a long shot. The guy didn't seem to know much about what he was selling which could be good and bad. But was positive it was solid. The bidding ended at a little over 102 dollars with yours truly as the highest bidder. Even with his perfect feedback and claiming it's silver and it good condition I still have doubts. What are the odds this is legit? Even if it is actually silver, who could I take it to to see if it's authentic?

Us. We can give you a pretty good idea if it's genuine or not. When youg et it post pictures here, along with the weight, if it looks questionable, and we'll do our best.

Oh I definitely plan to post very detailed pictures when it comes. That is assuming I don't see that copperish stripe around the edge or a shady looking date.. Again, still skeptical on authenticity. At least I can get my money back..

Weight would definitely be a big determinator, if it comes in a dime 2x2, you can subtract the weight of an empty dime 2x2 and get an estimate of the dime's weight without opening the 2x2. Remember to add the number of staples. I heard of another one popping up on another forum, wonder if the same or if there is a China run.

Hello and welcome to coin talk, I hope it is the real deal. When you have it in hand do post some pics and if you can weigh it. Keep us posted and good luck, it is still possible to find a good buy out there.

I was aware of the risk and I rarely take them, especially through ebay. But if it actually turns out to be the real deal, I spent $100 bucks or so on a coin worth many times more. Worst case scenario I'll have to file a complaint or push for a refund. Or, lesson learned about gambling on ebay and I'm out 100 bucks.

 well if it is real you just made like 40 times your investment easy lol you can look at it yourself silver has a much different look than cupric nickel coins also look at the rim if you see copper... you got jacked... a coin that has a solid silver rim i'd send it in to pcgs and get it graded. could be your early retirement coin =p

You can try weighing it but if it is inconclusive (difference is only .23 grams so if it is in a holder you may not be able to tell.) you can also try the tissue test. Lay a single layer of tissue paper over the subject coin along with a known silver dime and a clad dime in roughly the same condition. The silver coin will appear much whiter than the clad coin which will look a dull gray.

There are no completed sales on eBay (as far back as they allow) for a single coin with the title containing 1965 and either Roosevelt or dime that ended for around $102, that have any indication it was silver....that I could find.
