Hey there,I'm new to the forum and i need some help.
Heres a little store behind the quarter before we get started, its kinda funny.
Well its was my moms first or second time out detecting and didn't know much,I was being a digger but i was kind of side tracked by the few,My mom gets a target and starts to dig, next thing i know i hear her screaming bloody murder and almost falls off the cliff(we were perched on the side of a hill) I run over and shes holding this quarter in her hand.Upon ferther inspection its almost a perfect looking barber. Now im quite suprised,This was on a hill (not populated but any one these days but it was by a hold home site or a dumb not sure). My mom said it was no more then two inches under the surface by a tree on the edge of a trail/ cliff.
We detected on this hill on laterdates and concluded that it was an old hunting spot and because of all the dear in the area we found afew other wheat/silver pockted spills allong with a bag load of bullets(one musket ball.. weird).

i will post pictures alter tonight when i get my dads camera working...give me a few hours.. but heres a pic from my phone, cant see much.

    Welcome to CT.

That's a very cool find. I have never found a Barber quarter with my metal detector. It is impossible to give you a grade with your blurry pic. Please post pics that are in focus.

No i'm not trying to show off the crappy barbers there their for comparison since the camra quality is poor.

i also added a link to a larger picture under each just incase.

A little detail about the coin. (front)
The Liberty is all intact accept there is a little missing from the bottem of the R
The hair below the head band is beraly showing, but still showing a little, mostly wore.
you can see all the feathers on his head band.
a little definition left in his cheeks(i think, that might just be tarnish,i'm not sure if there is cheek definition on barbers.
All the stars around the sides are pretty well in tact
all face featers (noes eyes mouth chin) are almost perfect
There is one little scratch on the cheeck(so small you can't see in the picture)

    (back)
You can read E pluribus anum but it is wore down quite a bit,Probably the worst part of the coin.
All of the arrows tops and bottoms are fully intact,no wear
    the sheald is perfect
the feathers on the wings go almost to the edge, but at the top you can see there is some wear on the coin.
and the teal feathers are perfect..

Its 1909 S barber quater found in the ground,Not cleaned not even rinsed with water,Straight from the grownd to a coin holder..

I was also wondering if this would be worth sending it to get graded,We took it to a coin store and the guy said no its not worth it,He said its probably a 20 dollar coin but i was thinking it had to be worth atleast 100 since the condition.

    well thanks for the help!

Oh and also, see the color,it looks a bit tarnished, not much but still a little,Does that take away from the value of the coin,And if so would it be worth it to clean the coin?

Looks to be somewhere between a F-15 and a VF-20, a very nice detector find.

Okay, in oder of your questions:
    1) Agreed with BQ, but a touch higher, Probably VF.
    2) NO, not worth sending in to be graded/slabbed.

Your coin probably trades in the $30-$50 range, so I don't think it's worth spending $25-$35 to have it certified.

It's a nice raw coin, with a great story to go along with it. Just enjoy it the way it is.

Well i asked about slabbed because my mom is not going to sell it.Its her first good detector find and still her only lol.
So we probably will still get it slabbed.

and i was thinking VF-30 but i could be wrong,I based this off a article i found off google ?_?

    Colleczor,

Congrats to your mom on a great find! It sounds like you all have found a great hunting spot where Hunters sat and hunted Deer in the past and now you reap their' lost coins in the present. Also, welcome to Coin Talk!

I would say that the coin is a solid VF-25 which is incredible considering how long it may have been in the ground!

How did you clean the coin after finding it? The obverse seems to have some lines in the fields that look like it was harshly cleaned.

This coin was not cleaned at all,I think maybe not even rinsed off but rinsed at the most,
This is how it looked like straight out of the ground,No chemicals or any thing, just a little mother earth.

Yes,This is our favorite spot to go since its so close to home,we go there allot and usually pull out a silver or a wheat and if not we always find some pretty neat relics or a nice hunk of led witch is nice to make weight belts for dredging out of.They went yesterday and all they got was a few bullets and a hunk of led.

Does any one know a good grading service?
I'm new to all this coin stuff,I just started collecting a year ago and i have been getting my coins from antique stores and ebay so i don't know much.

Oh also cloudsweeper please remember the camera quality is extremely poor,You can't see much details so just read the description of the coin in one of my posts.
