I agree with this grade. The "gunk" looks greenish. So unless it's a problem with the image color, I'm thinking verdigris.
As I understand it, verdigris looks dry and crusty. PVC shows up as oily and smooth. That's why I went with verdigris.
Here are some more pics. They're actually closer to the true color on this thing than the other ones. It's actually pretty much a dark chocolate brown, throughout. I wasn't trying to play any photo-tricks on the other ones. I just didn't think that color-balance would cause some of you to see "issues" relative to the dirt. Notice that's the same, throughout the coin, wherever you look (...the wheat stalks, the wheat field lines, the rims, the date). My purpose in showing this was twofold, I guess. One, like I said, I wanted opinions on a precise number. The other is, that NW quadrant on the reverse. How do you see that? Do you see it as just wear? Obviously, there's wear throughout this coin. Is that wear in that quadrant possibly combined with a weak or greased strike? If the PLU and the O in ONE are weak, what's to say that tip of those wheat lines isn't (at least, in part) weakly-struck, as well? I don't know; I haven't seen, let alone handled, enough of these. But that's another issue I'd like opinions on. If a dealer or two could drop in, too, I'd also like to know what number-grade you'd let this go at.
It's close to VF, but I would only go as high as strong Choice-Fine (F15 or F18) for three reasons: 1) It looks like the wheat lines are almost but *not quite* complete, especially the far left tip. 2) The wheat kernels are quite worn, even merging and indistinct in places. 3) On the obverse, it appears that the cheek and jawline are worn smooth and merged, no distinct separation.
I think the upper one was taking out by grease on the reverse can't see nothing on the obverse through . I did lighten up the coin a little saw more detail now I up my stakes to VF 30 Jazzcoins joe
Thanks, BQ! Joe: Thanks for keeping an open mind (as usual)! Mlhradio: That's how I had the grade initially figured (and, primarily, for the reasons stated). I didn't see it as breaking into that next tier. Then, I looked at it longer. One advantage, of course, of having it in hand, is that I (like the TPGs?) can tilt it in the light and, in this case, see the cheek and jaw separation. Hard to capture that in a pic. It's by no means distinct, but, nonetheless, it's there. But, F to VF, I'd say, is on the playing field. Just trying to narrow the playing field. Need more opinions...
