Found Bison Rolls

To me, this is a real hoot.

Back in March, I ordered some bison rolls directly from the mint, that finally arrived today. In the "excitement" of reading about error coins, and the fact that they are a new issue, I decided to go by my local dealer and get a few rolls from him too. Just to have some extra.... you know how it is.

So I bought a couple bison, peace medal, and keelboat rolls.

This morning, I am at the local quick mart getting a cup of coffee. I noticed the cashier breaking a new roll of nickels, and she gives me a bison nickel out of it. I got to to thinking that a trip by the bank might not be a bad idea.

So I go by my local branch to get some coins to search. I asked for 10 rolls of nickels, and low and behold, I got 10 rolls of Bison "D", in the identical wrapper that my coin dealer had them in.

Of course, now I will continue to go by that branch and get nickels. I would like to have seen some P mints, but I cannot complain.

Is it me, or was this a neat little find? Should I break the rolls and search for errors, or keep them as is?

BTW, on another thread (<-link) the question was asked about circulated vs uncirculated about the above mentioned nickel the cashier handed me. Is it circulated or uncirculated?

The answer to that question is: If you are buying, that nickel is "circulated". If you are selling, it is "uncirculated". If you are selling on Ebay, it is "proof condition" or MS-69

I would keep them rolled...I see that the 2004-P Peace Nickels are now selling in Coin World for $14.95!!!

I have sold some rolls of 2004-P Peace Nickels less than a year after I got them for $4 a roll....Now I'm not much on the newer date coins but if I were you I would leave them just like they are.

I would open up a couple of the rolls anyways, just to see if they contain any errors. Save the other ones if you don't find anything.

Let us know what you find if you open a roll or two.

I opened 4 rolls and did not find any errors.

The interesting thing is that some of them have very good strikes, and I can see the difference with coins sitting side by side.

The ones from the bank came in white wrappers with light blue print and the blue bar code looking pattern on the ends. Under the "$2.00 Nickels" text is 'N.R. String & Son, Inc. Harrisburg, PA., USA'.

When I got the rolls from my dealer, they were in the same white\blue wrapper and having seen the wrapper they come in from the mint, I wondered if my dealer searched them.

The bank roll the cashier at the quick mart broke open, the ones from my dealer, and the ones from the bank are the same color\style. The rolls from the Mint are the colorful "Westward Journey Series" wrapper.

I went to another branch of the same bank and got another 10 rolls, but I got a mixture of generic nickels in the same white with blue wrapper.

I am going back by the bank tomorrow and try to get some more.

Even though I didn't find any errors, I am still tickled that I got 10 rolls at face value. Especially after paying twice that at my dealer.

The rolls at your dealers didn't come from the mint---the mint doesn't roll coins like that...the coins they do roll are way over face and are full color...
The rolls are your dealers are wrapped by the trucks that brings them to the banks.

I got 4 more rolls from them today.

I asked the teller when they got their coins, and she said they order them as they need them. I am thinking about asking the manager to order some for me. Considering I have been banking there for 20 years, I don't think it should be a big request to fulfill.

Spider, I am keeping the bank secret. I will add that it is a relatively small branch in the boonies. I have been to other branches in the city and have not had any luck. I thought the urban banks would have more turnover, but maybe since they have a lot of commercial business, it is the opposite. They recycle from schools and the local stores.

I went by my local dealer to get some tubes and told him what I found. He said they were told that the mint directed the Bison nickels be mixed with other nickels to make people buy them from the mint.

I have yet to find a bison nickel in any other rolls; out of about 40 rolls. I have found some pristine keel boat and peace nickels, but no bisons.

Not sure what all this means, but I am going to keep going by my lucky branch.

Does your bank tellers ever look at you funny when you ask for rolls? One time I went and asked for a $25 box of pennies. Then they started asking a lot of questions.

That is an interesting question because I have noticed some less than stellar customer service skills.

The bank where I found the bison rolls, mostly they just "do their job" and give me the rolls. One biotch gives me a disgusted look like I am putting them out. I don't bother them on Friday or if they are busy. When the bison rolls play out, that is where I will cash my searched coins in.

I drive a lot on my job so I get to stop by different branches. Mostly, they just to their job. But I went by one branch where I explained to the lady what I was doing. The bank was empty (I wouldn't bug them at a really busy time) so the conversation ended up being with all 4 tellers. They were interested in the new designs and curious why the bank had not communicated to them that customers would be coming in looking for the new nickels. One teller said her husband showed her one\or told her about them or that would have been the first she heard of it.

The really impressive thing to me, the teller that helped me at the last bank, said "I guess I need to order some of those nickels because you are not the first customer that has asked about them". I went on to ask her if she minded me coming in like that and the answer was "oh, of course not, but I couldn't give you all of our nickels...". So I found a nice slow branch with a great attitude. I am going to take them a box of candy to show my appreciation. I will also find out if she has ordered any nickels. She might be the one for me to get to order a big box of them.

I wasn't aware the banks could order specific dates of rolled coins. I dunno why but I always feel awkward asking for rolls because I know they might start asking questions or giving me funny looks.

I have never heard that banks can order specific dates. (As far as I know they can't). As for feeling awkward, I pull about $600 in face value a year in silver coins from bank rolls. Look at me funny all you want! :D

I don't think the teller meant that she could specify dates in orders, but more along the lines that since it was new currency, she could have some new rolls around to give customers. In my follow ups, I will be interested to see if she orders nickels and gets Bison. If she does, I am going to ask if she will order me a $100 box.

I did ask her if it cost the branch money to get the coins from the Federal Reserve, but she wasn't sure. Does anyone know for sure?

I feel a little odd getting rolls from banks too. But I remind myself that I have been banking with them for over 20 years.

Things that ease my sensibilities are that I do not go in when there is a long line or on Friday, and I don't ask for wrappers. I buy my own wrappers, which are very inexpensive when bought in bulk on the internet.

I also ask if they need my debit card and show it to them so they at least know that I bank with them.

Like I metioned above, I found a cooperative bank with a good attitude so next time, I am taking a box of candy for the tellers.

Wait 'til you go inand order a $500 box of halves. You want to see some funny looks try that or order $50 in pennies. I went to a branch bank and ordered the pennies and they did not have $50 in pennies. That was funny. :p :D :p :D

i think at my bank the younger tellers are lazy. they will try to get out of stuff when theres no one in the bank. (im the guy walking in 2 mins after they opened) I am going to open another account across the street because i was told that some old guy was taking EVERY SINGLE half dollar in the bank, once a week. (it may be mean, but i believe he goes no a Mon or a Wednes, so i go on Friday to let it build)
