Hi Benjamin, As a group of coins, you probably won't find anyone who really wants all of it. Much will be seen as just worth melt, such as the damaged coins, modern silver like many of the quarters, some of the AG coins which many think are too worn for their collections, love tokens ( unless it is a collecting interest), foreign coins without details as to content, etc. Money is tight, and most are looking for specifics. I would suggest segregating the offerings into several packages and using ebay for the widest exposure. Best of luck to you. And give my regards to your parents or others who stressed politeness. Heh....some nice coins there....I'm not too good with US coin values....so I wouldn't be much help, but breaking it up into smaller lots sounds like a smart bet to me. jazzcoins joe, 105 years eh? wow. Great Job! I worked for a 96 year old british chap a little while back...I was amazed that anyone at that age could be as lucid and clever as he was. I hope I'm half as with it as you are when I'm that age.
Okay, I crunched the numbers. A dealer would pay around $200.00 for your lot. Almost all the silver coins you have are only worth melt. As soon as a coin has a hole in it, we considere it to be AG grade and lower. The love tokens on the smaller denom are worth around $8 each (fully carved surface). The rest of the coins you can purchase on ebay by the pound. I would recomend splitting up the coins into lots as they will sell better than all together. Good luck selling.
Jim, Thank you for the feedback. I know about money being tight (I just found out 3 days before the beginning of the semester that 2/3 of my classes were cancelled due to budget cutbacks - leaving me basically unemployed...with no notice.) As a result I've seen my coin collection (thankfully, I had it) virtually disappear. I've managed to keep a few of my favorite items (a 1917D Type 1 Standing Liberty Quarter in XF, a 1949S Roosevelt Dime in MS65 with amazing toning) but for the most part...I now have an empty trunk. Hooray...but sometimes all you can do is what you HAVE to do...and survive for the better times down the road. By the way..if anyone in the St. Louis area needs an honest, intelligent, creative, and hard working employee...please let me know! Thanks again, ~benjamin
In case someone is just reading this, I've edited the original ad and I will be working on eBay to sell the coins there. It's my first time selling...so wish me luck. Only thing I don't like about the idea of eBay selling is dealing with irrational customers that will try to cheat me. But other than that...eh. Thanks, ~benjamin
Ah, shame you had to liquidate most of your collection...at least you kept some of the good stuff. ebay is great, good luck with your sales. I haven't yet run into any irrational customers, but I haven't been on ebay all that long either. I wish you well, mate.
Update: The funniest thing: I removed about 10 of the better coins from this auction - basically any coin that I wanted to keep or sort of wanted to keep - (1932 AU quarter, 1940 AU quarter, 1853 quarter and half, 1895 dime, 1913 quarter, 1865 2 cent piece in F, 1986 and 1988 Half, more) and the lot sold almost immediately for $350. When I had twice as much stuff in there...the best offer I got was $200 for everything. Ah, yes, the human race...
