Does losing coins in a burglary count? How about sending a coin (1853-D $5) to PCGS and having it stolen out of the mail? If either or both, yes.

I sell on eBay and also do shows (or at least I did shows before Covid). A couple times a year I've gotten an order from my eBay store. And I've gone to look for the coin, and... ??? About half the time I eventually find it...put it in the wrong box, or something... but a few times I've had to apologize to the buyer and refund his money. Did I get it stolen at a show, or did I just get really scatterbrained? I never do find out.

This past summer I lost a 1967 Canadian goose dollar that had been a faithful and reliable pocket piece. It was beginning to show some meaningful wear, having started out BU in September 2017. I'm confident that it's in the house somewhere; the last place I had it was on my bed table while going through some coins. The next morning I noticed it was gone when I went to put it in my pocket, and we had not been robbed or anything. It's in between those two points where I dont remember what I might have done with it. I bought a new one to replace it but it's never made it into the pocket yet as I dont want to ruin a pristine coin when the old one might still turn up.

    Not lost but stolen.
I sold some coins on Ebay about 15 years ago. Went to the PO, which were closed for some Gov. holiday. Went home, did some yard work and forgot the coins in my truck. Laying in bed that night is when it hit me.
It, being a super safe neighborhood, never had any crime, ever, for the 30+ years, I said 'screw-it' and left them.
Got up and, well, yeah you guessed it!
I had been upgrading my Wash. quarter book and in those packages were a 1932-d & s, 36-d and a 37-s......totaling just shy of a grand, plus 3 red NEG feedbacks strikes, (one buyer believed me).
Long story short, about 8 months later, I get a call from the 'cop shop', they busted the gang, a huge multi-million dollar criminal theft outfit, and got my 'mail' back. They had never bothered to opened the packages.
Sent the news article to Ebay and cleared my negative strikes.
Thanks for your time CT people.

I like your entry, especially about your cat. I do most of my work in a separate building on our property. About 3 years ago, around Christmas, there was a very young kitten trying to cross the road. As we had 5 dogs at our home in the country, so an addition of a cat wasn't possible, so we looked the other way. When I was returning home, the kitten was on the other side of the road. It was freezing cold and I didn't want the kitten to be killed crossing the road again or dying from the cold. We brought him home, hoping to find him a home. After many tries, no one wanted a kitten. So my 3 year old "kitten" helps me when I work on my colletion. I had a coin that I was looking at. I had to go to the main house and when I returned, the coin was gone. I tore my office apart, but no luck. I finally gave up. About 6 months later, I was moving his bed and lo and behold, my coin. I didn't know if I should kill my cat or love him. Anyway, I now have my coin again.

I figure if I'm sloppy enough in my record-keeping, I'll never lose a coin -- or, at least, nobody will ever be able to prove I lost a coin.

I did buy a pair of impaired common gold dollars back in 2012 or so for just above melt. They're super-easy to lose -- but for the past few years, I've been in a situation where it seems like I can always find one, but not the other. That wouldn't be so confusing, except that it's not the same coin each time.

I've mentioned before that starting in about 2006 my cat Cuddles collected coins that she would steal from my desk when I wasn't looking. Trying to get one back from her was like trying to take one of her kittens away--not something to do without a pair of heavy gloves!

Cuddles is gone now--I lost her just before Christmas of 2014, but I treasure her collection--it's in the SDB right along with mine. She had added a few more halves and quarters. Seems like just like me she simply couldn't deal with the smaller denominations.

I love your picture of Cuddles. I have a cat that lives in my office. I picked him up just before Christmas of 2018. It was freezing rain and a very young kitten was trying to get across the street. I didn't pick the kitten up until my second pass. I took the kitten home, a tried to find a home. It seems that no one wants a kitten. I thought the kitten was a female, so I named the kitten Honey. I took the kitten to the vet to get shots and get the kitten "fixed". It was then that I found that Honey is a he. I still call him Honey. My wife calls him Salvatore. I built a perch in my office for Honey. He sits there all the time I am working on my coin collection. Honey is great company.
