Was thinking about going into some banks and asking, but not sure if this shortage nonsense is over or not and it's not worth the effort if they are still roll rationing. So are banks getting back to normal in your area? Did they ever get abnormal in your area?
I have seen most firms take down the signs. I haven't heard anything about it, so I am guessing its over. When a panic is over its never front page news like the panic itself is.
The supply issue is spotty. Not all the banks have opened their lobbies yet. Some banks are still rationing coins for businesses. But they might be open for a swap if you have a good relationship with them. A gift of cupcakes might grease the wheels of commerce for you.
I live in the greater New Haven,CT area and nothing seems to have changed in regards to the coin shortage. Every retail store has a sign up indicating this situation and asking for exact change or use of plastic cards. Before March I would go to various banks and get rolled coins. The banks I deal with still will not give me any rolled coins whatsoever. I have been offered 1 roll of pennies, when before I would buy a sealed bank box of pennies. Very odd and I would sense that this problem would be totally over by now.
Yeah agree. I feel like it should have been sorted out by now also. Same issue in my area too. Seems like if your area was affected it's still affected and if your area wasnt, nothing really changed. Where I am we just got past our covid peak a few weeks ago and opening schools up..... I think a lot of it has to do with the armored carriers having less than adequate staffing for the routes possibly. I was hoping things were normalizing in other areas but it seems this is the new normal... sucks..
Generally I haven't had a problem at the two credit union branches I go to. I always mark my checked rolls with a large X and they know to not give those back to me. I have asked and they told me they have experienced no shortage, although occasionally I hear "we only, or mostly, have the ones you returned." My CU never has halves or dollars available. There is one nearby bank which, even though I have no account, will let me exchange rolls with whatever the tellers have in their drawers (but they won't go to the vault). That bank has also offered loose halves or dollars in their drawers.
So far my credit unions are only letting me buy halves and Ikes. The rest are still going to Brinks etc for the time being.
I still can’t buy boxes of coins any longer. One Chase branch has completely backed me off, other locations will give me 1 or 2 rolls total. Wells Fargo doesn’t give me much, maybe 2 rolls of each denomination. My best luck has been at Navy Federal Credit Union which gives me 5 rolls of each denomination a day, per branch. For me, at this time, I can’t get halves any longer, and I started hunting dimes because why not? I found a silver dime last week! I’ll average a W quarter in about 1 out of every 20 rolls.
The bank lobbies in my area of Maryland are closed. You are not permitted in without an appointment. To get an appointment is not hard, however I have not tried. The issue as I see it is a circulation problem. I have decided to focus on other areas of my collecting hobby at this point and not bother the bank associate with the burden of letting me in to get a box of cents and worry about getting covid19. I think it's a perosnal responsiblity to want to keep other safe in this pandemic vs. the want to get a box to search. Is it really that important? We'll be over this soon if everyone does their part. Regular cash using Americans are not using cash due to the pandemic, plain and simple and it's continuing a coin circulation shortage.
I'm in college in middle of nowhere Indiana. I'm able to normally get multiple boxes every week. Guess I am very lucky.
