The mint finally released the selling price. Noon tomorrow will be a busy time for a lucky few, and even more unlucky ones.

What is this for, that World War II counterstamp gold thing? Or is is something else?

I think of some better numismatic ways to spend $2,600.

 

Yes, the WWII 75th anniversary privy mark gold coin.

 

The price is at least $600 too high.

 

$700 over spot !!! The price of a nice type double eagle. I am still going back and forth on if its good to try for an investment (and maybe sell quickly). Its a cool coin and 1945 is a neat mintage but not sure it going to be my thing st that price

 

Bet you that 1945 people disagree tomorrow?

It's worth what buyers will pay - and they will. Indeed, I feel confident that over the next few weeks we will see a LOT of buyers pay a LOT more than that. In fact, I'll put my money where my mouth is. I'll give anyone $2600 for one tomorrow if they can deliver it. Any takers?

 

I can spend that kind of money on a coin that's actually worth that kind of money.

 

And three or four years later, most people won't care.

 

Of course. MOST people don't care now. MOST people never care about coins period! Even among collectors here . . . pick any specific coin, and probably most people here won't care, because it's not what they collect. So what does that even mean?

People right here were saying last year that demand for the 2019-S Enhanced Reverse Proof ASE would be in the pits by now, too expensive, just wait a few months, yadda, yadda, etc. Ungraded coins still selling for about $850 last I checked - many times what the mint originally charged.

But anyway, that has to do with what WILL BE (or actually MAY BE) too high in three or four years. Not what is too high now. Or tomorrow.

That being said, the fact is , , , I'm not even going to try tomorrow, because I don't think there will be time to get both gold and silver coins into my cart/bag and checkout before one or both will be unavailable. I will stick to trying to get one of the more plentiful silver coins through the checkout before they're gone - and feel lucky if I do!

 

I have some dealer friends offering more than double issue price

 

I still think the price will come down more, but yes, it hasn't crashed.

The price for high-end 1995-W ASE's has fallen bigtime from the bubble peak a few years ago. Haven't checked lately, but I believe generic 1995-W's, PL's, DMPL's, 1st Strike, etc...have all fallen hard.

Maybe long-time collectors from the U.S. Mint can remember other "hot" coins that fell bigtime in price over the years.

The site was a disaster. Every time I tried to refresh it crapped out. So I would open a new window. Then, at some point I got blocked from even going to the site. Like I got a message that I was blocked. And there is no way to resolve it. Complete goat rodeo

 

And how I got a silver one in my bag and the site crapped out

 

I'm starting at a "add to bag" screen, hitting add......and bag won't update.....boinked again.....

 

The gold ones were probably sold "out the back door" before the site opened.

The mint's record on the distribution of the "hot" commoratives is very similar to the scandals connected with old commemorative coins, like the Hudson and Cincinnati half Dollars.

I am so glad that don't have a collector's interest in these items any more.

Logged in 15 mins ahead of time....fit to the order screen, but never added to the bag....I tend to agree with @johnmilton above....murky dealings behind the scenes. Been a customer a loooong time as well.

Before it all crapped out, I actually had a gold coin in the bag, but then got blocked before I could complete the purchase. It finally let me back in and of course they are all gone
