I am reasonably sure that this coin has not been oiled or soaped. It is about as well struck a 24-S as I have seen. Since no one has slammed it too bad, I will say that it is compliments of HCC i.e. Budgood. And I am pleased all around about it.
Thanks- RLM I appreciate it, I am pretty sure myself that the coin was not treated with oil or anything else too. Its always nice to see the responses & sit on the sidelines some times.
Looked awfully shiny to me too. Oil, huh. Whoda thunk. What a waste. Still it's a mighty nice looking cent.
Read the thread- the buyer doesnt think it was coated . I sold it & I know it wasnt coated with anything.
Then what's the shine from? A copper cent cent should have SOME patina. New proofs don't even shine like that. And I still say that I like the coin. Is it in an Airtite or plastic container of some kind? encil:
Looks like a bid picture to me , possibly its in a 2x2 with mylar over it or just glare. I dont see the "shine" . Here is my picture of the coin as displayed on the website.
Guys, you are nisreading my comment - - was made merely for the purpose of illustration. I was merely saying that coins that have been washed in a soap and coins that have been coated with oil - can and often do look like that. I was not saying the coin was or was not coated with anything.
Thats a nice coin. Mr. BudGoods Pictures are clear and easy to see. That is one of the nicest 24S I have ever seen. Based on Mr. BudGoods pictures, I would say AU-53 with exceptional strike. It is nice to get a better look at the jaw.
I would take the word of a knowledgable numismatist anyday over a pic on the net. Also, you can try this your self....do a before and after pic of a RB or BR copper and use some Coincare or Blue Ribbon. It's quite obvious once you know what to look for.
Once I received the coin in hand, I guessed a 62 BR and kept that private between Dick and myself. I was pleasantly suprised today to get my latest batch of grades and see this as a 63 BR. Another perfect example of the difficulty to both take a digital image, and to grade from one.:kewl:
You scored there RLM. Big money!! Market grading I guess most would think, but justified as the strike is unbelieveable.
