...great Everett!...i really like that Geta denarius....and i must say,(in a less violent way than @hotwheelsearl ) i've never seen an obverse quite like that of Claudius Gothius...but i've not seen'em all either..good job!
I was referring to the first Antoninus Pius. Mushy details makes I seem like a contemporary forgery or a fourree the Claudius looks really good to me. I like the beard detail
Ah..i see what you mean...yes I seen that when I took the pic and wondered about the look. I got go go back and see where I got it from and what i paid. Most I have won at auction has been $26-49 a couple $55-60 range
i would bet its authentic..i'll put $5.00 on the pius being real...that's the only way i'll make(or lose) any money on authenitcation..
I wished I knew a local place I could check with, all the coin places around here always say, we dont know anything about them and no one ask for them. One guy today told me if he had one he wouldnt even know what it was but to look in his foreign coin box..lol. but I do value you guys and the gal's opinions for sure.
..haha...well, it mostly all comes down to opinions on ancients anyway...and these peeps here are purdy good at it...sometimes we don't all agree, but it never gets boring...
Yes, i am glad I get these coins cheaper than on the websites but on ebay its a gamble. I need to finish doing more homework on the coins before I bid. I see coins that look good and figure if I can get $18-46 I bid. The only two I spent over 50 I had a few beers then the next week 6 or 7 coins showed up also. I got a bunch of emails from ebay I won 8 more. They raised my limit to 4k and its hard not to bid on everything half way decent under $30
It's hard to tell without the weight, but the Antoninus Pius DIVO PIO reverse (RIC 442) does appear to have telltale plating breaks. That would suggest it's a fourree. But not a modern fake.
That was my first impression, either fourree or barbaric imitation of some kind. Eithe way, it’s ancient and interesting
