What to do with bad condition/tarnished standing liberty quarter?

Okay, so I've had these coins lying around for a while, and as you can see they're in awful condition. One's a dateless standing liberty quarter, and the other is a dateless Canadian quarter, both silver. I'm not exactly sure, but I believe they were stored in PVC flips for a while. I know cleaning coins is almost never ever good, but with coins in this bad condition, is there some way to get rid of the tarnish and toning so they look less dark and more silver? Or would you just leave them alone?

Clean the Standing Liberty Quarter if you want, it no longer has any value past its' silver bullion value of about $2US or so.

Only 1916 and 1917 Type 1 Standing Liberty Quarters can be identified if dateless, closest I can tell you on your coin is that it's either a 17 Type 2, 18, 19, 20, 21, 23 or 24 and it was minted in Philadelphia. Don't feel too bad, unless it was originally a 21 none of those are terribly valuable coins, especially in poor condition. Oh, and it was minted from Clashed Dies, based on the clash itself, I would guess a 1919, 1921 or 1923

If you think they look bad now, wait until you clean them.

I think you should let them as is. There's really no point in cleaning them. I'd sell them for the silver value and put the money towards something else you may want.

    they are only melt anyway.

Save the polish for your 1804 silver $.

These would be good experimental coins for cleaning, or you can give them to a hopeful future generation collector. If I was eight years old, I'd think they were pretty neat!

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll just hold onto them for their silver value.

Leave them as-is, or keep them as a pocket piece. You'd be amazed how nice coins like this can look if you keep them in your pocket for a while.

You beat me to it! That's what I was about to suggest. Coins are designed to be carried around and much of the undesirable toning will wear off if you keep the coins in your pocket with a couple of other coins for a few months. You'll still have a well-worn coin, but it might not be ugly.:hatch:

awwww, well make sure you love them. Just because they've been loved to the point of melt value doesn't mean they shouldn't be loved = )

I've been playing with a dateless S Mint SLQ this evening... everyone talks about different ways to try and get the date readable, but, turns out...

What about good ole Dip? Dip removes silver, right? Yep, sure does. So I have been reapplying dip with a Q-Tip to the date area over the past hour and a half or so, and slowly but surely, the date is indeed starting to show! :D

    I highly doubt it's a 1919-S or 1923-S, but you never know!

Oh, dip in question is E-Z-Est

And I got a nice 1930 VF-20 Standing Liberty Quarter from borgovan (his pic below)...so I'll soon have two in my collection.
