so is this a mint error??? Or damaged??? Im new to collecting coins and just do it for fun. I dont know much at all about them. But ibe searched the internet high and low on the 1975 D penny and havent found nothing. It just doesnt look like its damaged to me. Please help. Could i have found like a one of a kind error???
Not enough pictures.. Just kidding. Looks to be a Cent that was struck with a worn die. We call it Struck Through Grease. When the overused Die that is used to strike the Blank Planchets is wiped down with grease the gunk gets compacted within the incused area of the Die and does not allow the lettering to form properly on the planchet. Looks neat but nothing really major. I like how you can only read.. RUST Thanks for sharing and welcome to CoinTalk!
First, welcome to the neighborhood, Jessica! Since you're new to coin collecting, you have to ask yourself, "Would the US Mint go to all of the trouble and expense to create dies that look this bad to make coins that we use everyday?"
Yes, welcome to CT. May not be worth much but an interesting coin it is in my opinion. Nice find, it's a keeper...
Welcome to the neighborhood Jessica. Neat find, but probably won't be much in the way of a premium if you try to sell it. The interesting fact is how much of the devices (letters) are missing. Usually it is just a letter or two.
Going forward, handle coins by the edge or use white cotton gloves. The oils in your skin/fingers will cause damage. Welcome to Coin Talk!…Spark
