OK, you are showing sales from 10 or more years ago when a totally different market was in play. Regardless, PCGS has it valued at $75 so, where is your argument now? You can't use sales from over 3 years back to justify a listing today. This is what Rick Tomaska does and he is an idiot and not respected anymore for these reasons. So, believe what you want and be unethical if you choose...I don't.

So I get it that you don't find added value to colorful toned coins. What I don't get is how you can't comprehend that some collectors add value to more unique coins. Personally, I don't buy toned coins but respect those that do. If there wasn't a market for colorful toned coins then you wouldn't see coins like this selling for that much over "price guide". Price guides pretty much reflect the market for the general population of coins. There will always be outliers that will not be reflected in any price guide. I use the term "price guide" loosely since I usually look at auction results; weighing more recent results more heavily along with strike, eye appeal, and yes, spectacular toning.

I'm sure Lehigh96 understands your argument. But as real world sales show, there's a market for special coins. It's all dictated by what one is willing to spend. My coin budget is very modest so I don't play that game.

The guide for that coin hasn't changed in years.

If you click on the link, you will see:
"Numismedia Wsl. Price for problem free NGC/PCGS coin in MS67: $61"
    https://coins.ha.com/itm/jefferson-...roblem-f/a/1136-7706.s?hdnJumpToLot=1&x=0&y=0

So the guide back then was $61 and it sold for $977.50.

Your comparison to Rick Tomaska is also false. What he does is pick the highest priced active listing (not actual sale) and pretend that his coin is available for much less.

I recommend you do some more extensive research and see what toners really sell for compared to guides. Or don't and continue to be obdurate. It's your choice but do know that your opinions just don't mesh with the market.

Toning can very easily raise the vale by that much or many multiples of that much.

They aren't the ones showing a complete lack of knowledge.

    False

    False

Many people especially on forums just don't care about facts or knowledge and just want things to be the way they want them because they said they should

More importantly guides were never meant for or even really relevant for toners or superb examples, they were always for more common coins and run of the mill average at best examples

It's apparent that you are completely out of touch with the market. I saw discussion about the following coin on another forum this morning.

    https://www.greatcollections.com/Co...ilver-Dollar-PCGS-MS-67-CAC-OGH-2nd-Gen-Toned

Here are the Current price guide values
Heritage Auction price guide = $500-$625
    PCGS price guide = $700
    CDN = $675

Hammer price from last sunday = $7900 + commission

This isn't atypical. There is a segment of the market that will pay huge premiums for toned coins and has been doing so for some time.

Feel free to comment that the coin is ugly (it us IMO) and feel free to comment that paying a huge premium for a toned coin is ridiculous (many have), but insisting that coins like this or the one @Lehigh96 sells, are only worth the price guide value is irresponsible at best and delusional at worst.

You are entitled to your OPINION regarding their value, but to insist people are crooks...well, I can't even begin to understand where you're coming from. I think you owe @Lehigh96 an apology for those false and unsubstantiated accusations.

Toning is the beginning of the oxidation of the silver and ends (like the family silverware) in a horrible black color. What guarantee do you have that over a period of time the beautifully toned specimen you paid a Mint for won’t do the same? Better keep it in a nitrogen gas environment.

That coin is an advertising piece and I have it priced high because I don't really want to sell it, but if someone wants to pay $900 for it like I did a decade ago, then they can have it. Furthermore, the coin is absolutely stunning in hand and deserves a huge toning premium.

You asked for others to chime in, and they have, it seems that nearly everybody thinks you are full of it.

You'd be surprised as to how many buyers prefer 'raw' coins opposed to slabbed.

Lehigh96, I am going to be selling all of my coins, which got me to this forum and this thread, and am in the process of getting the best of them graded. Your comments on photos make a lot of sense to me, and I took a look at your ebay store. Wow! Incredibly nice and revealing photos. I have thought about having PCGS take pictures. I have normal cellphone cameras, good ones. But I really don’t have a plan or a process.

What I often see on ebay is highly graded coins that have fuzzy photos. I don’t want to be like this. I am a former collector, just wanting to get decent prices for my coins and make a new owner happy, so I want to take clear shots that don’t hide anything. I have done little selling on ebay, but I have been a member since 2003 and have never had anything but satisfied buyers, and the reason that I think this is the case is that I never hide anything in my listings. Coins seem sort of unique, in that I think that I could probably make them look like whatever I want. What I want isn’t embellishment. What I want is accurate pictures.

My question is, have you ever discussed how you take these pictures? If so, could you point me to the right place?

Please read the my post in the thread linked below. It is 10 years old, but I haven't changed my methods in all that time so it should do the trick.

    Pictures

The only adjustments I make in post processing are for brightness and contrast, and often times the photos won't need any adjustments.

Toners can bring huge premiums in the marketplace. Knowledge and cash are king on the bourse.

Nice. Goosenecks ordered. I am a photography klutz, but you make it sound pretty easy in your post, at least from an equipment standpoint, so I’ll try. What is your opinion of the photos that PCGS and NGC take, compared to yours?
