Hello everyone I live in Florida and want to sell items on ebay. Someone ask me the other day if I will be required to collect sales tax, and I told them I wasn't sure. Does anyone know if sellers are required to collect sales tax? Thanks

eBay will collect sales tax automatically if the buyer is in a state that requires its collection on online purchases. Some states do and some don't. You won't have to do anything.

Ebay did ask me to post sales tax rate for my area when I went to list an item. So I just want to do the right thing but not sure what is right thing to do. Anyway I know a lot of you post on ebay so thought I would ask.

The statement about automated collection is not entirely true. eBay does not yet have an agreement with Florida, so as a Florida resident, you are still obligated to collect applicable sales tax on in-state sales (i.e. only those shipped to a Florida address). The good news is that US legal-tender coins are not taxable in Florida. However, most other types of coins and merchandise are taxable. Best to check the Florida Dept of Revenue website or give them a call.

Meow has been paying taxes on ebay stuff for the past year, and it can really take a bite on a collecting budget. Its like paying for shipping twice. Meow misses the good old days. Meow has been hoarding stuff from ebay for 22 years, and only recently have they been charging taxes on all auction winnings.

Yes, but @MeowtheKitty likes going to the store in the Winter without having to shovel the snow off the streets. So at least Meow's taxes are going to things Meow likes...

There are only so many ways to tax to provide for all of the services people want - you can tax

    • Money coming in (income tax)
    • Money sitting still (property tax)
    • Money going out (sales tax, VAT)

Premium gasoline costs $3.67 where Meow lives. Meow is positive there is a lot of taxes mixed in with that blend. They dont even sell real gas anymore, its all e10. They are making it hard for Cats to enjoy single digit mileage V8s.

TaxUs has the Federal 18.4c tax and state 20c, gas was 1.579 today.

So 1.195 is the actual fuel cost ...

But in the "good old days" Meow probably owed use tax to her state which she, like a GREAT many other people, never paid. So in the good old days Meow committed tax evasion, a crime. (Not judging you, mea culpa) So in longing for the "good old days" you are yearning to be a criminal again. :)

Being a reseller I’m tax exempt. Though now getting all the online purchases to be exempt Is a pain. I don’t sell online just in person
