    Hello Folks!

Just acquired this nice 1862 Rupee of British India with lovely die doubling (or is it machine doubling?) on the upper half of the reverse side.

Kindly share your thoughts and feedback and feel free to guess the grade as well. And, don't forget to click on the photo to see the full-size for clarity!

Thank you, kindly. Stay safe! 1862 Die Doubling Half-ccfopt.jpg 1862 Obv DD-ccfopt.jpg 1862 Rev DD-ccfopt.jpg

Very interesting. Especially the last E in RUPEE.

Thanks, but what are your views about the doubling? Die or machine?

This is a very cool coin! And very odd too... the doubling is all Over the place including the floral pattern. But it’s also somewhat inconsistent. Some letters look like they could have been repunched!? The dies for this design were used throughout 1862-1873, so could that be possible?

Hi Jaytant, thanks for your reply. Yes, the dies were used for several years and the digits were re-punched many times when a certain digit/letter got worn out due to excessive usage of the die.

Looks like split serifs especially the 3 E's and I don't see any significant thinning of the letters that would be characteristic of MD. I would call it a Doubled Die

Thanks Spark1951, you mean die doubling and not machine doubling, right?

@Director ...yes, die doubling, not MD. Sorry, should have been specific...Spark
