I have been reading the site for a while. Quite enjoyable and informative. I look forward to reading and enjoying this board for a long time to come. Thought I would post the winning design for the South Dakota State Quarter

A fairly nice design for the quarter, and couldn't think of any thint else to put on the coin.

    Thanks for sharing. :)

Yes,it is a nice coin design, but isn't a pheasant an introduced bird? Here in New Zealand, hunters are always shooting pheasants,
which is native to Asia, not America!

My thoughts exactly! I like the design quite well but would have much preferred either Mt. Rusnmore with the bison or just the bison alone. Why the pheasant??? Oh well... Not my state so I had no vote.

I had even cast a vote on this coin, but I certainly didn't vote for this design, because of the pheasant.

I am a native of SD. I think the reason the pheasant was a popular choice is because of the significance to the local economy. The pheasant hunting season brings in over $100 million per year and is probably one of the most anticipated past-times for many people in South Dakota as well as out-of-staters. The Department of Game & Fish estimates 80,000 residents and 70,000 non-residents take part in pheasant hunting every year.

So I think the significance of the pheasant lies purely on the economic impact it has on the state. You could have also made an argument for the walleye as well but all-in-all not a bad choice.

I agree. Being around a hunting/conservation group most of my life, when someone mentions South Dakota, the first thing that comes to mind is the Pheasant.

if it was just the bison, we would have a giant look a like of the nickel

I really like this design. Maybe the pheasant is out of place thematically, but it brings a certain radial symmetry to the design, as does the wheat. The candidate design that had the bison crammed on the same coin as Rushmore was awful. The design with the bison by itself was good, as was the coin with Rushmore by itself.

Nice to see Teddy Roosevelt on a coin finally. Maybe he was on a commemorative, I don’t know. Right now I have zero interest in commemoratives, notes, and errors.

Rushmore is a monument, not a dead president ! :)

But, I feel your pain. I have less than zero interest right now in the proposed presidents and first ladies dollars.

You're not the only one, I think. But it was quite clear from the beginning that putting that monument on the quarter would not be an option. "(SD Gov.) Rounds said Crazy Horse Memorial wasn't considered because rules didn't allow designs to include nonpublic images."

The pheasant is also the South Dakota state bird. Just like some of the other state birds shown on other quarters.

From the article...."Over the next 18 months, United States Mint artists will begin the process of creating the final art for the project in preparation to engrave and mint the quarters for national distribution."

Can't help but think this paragraph translate into "dumb down, flatten, and artistically butcher" the design. I understand the need to make dies that last longer and such, but its a shame how much of the "art" is sometimes lost in making the "function".

The deciding factaor to not put Crazy Horse on the coin was b/c it is a copywrited image. The Ziolkowski family would have had to grant permission to use the image on a coin.

Kinda interesting, but I wonder how many other states have a hunting season for their state bird?

I could do without the bird. People feel the need to jam as much stuff as possable onto the states quarter, makes them too cluttered.
