Well, I won this Franklin this week in my local bid board. Now, I know this is heavily toned, but can anyone guess the grade this Franklin received? I will also post pics of the slab later on. It is an older slab. I had heard about these, but had never seen one before. The Franklin is a 57D. Have fun. :D

That thing just sucked the brightness from my monitor lol.

It's hard to tell from the pics...really dark. So I really can't give it a grade, although I don't see any wear...yet.

lol I saw 57-D and I thought to myself "what are the odds??"

But Mr. Franklin IS awfully lonely...poor guy only has buffs and a merc to play with at school :crying:

and I DO see some mottled toning on the upper reverse around the rim, so maybe they have something in common after all = P

I don't have the coin in hand so it's hard to tell. Gonna say at least MS64.

Funny thing is I like toned coins even black ones. I have Washingtons and a Roosie that are basically black. Difference between them and a Franklin is they still retain luster well.

Just my opinion of course but I've seen enough slabbed Franklins like yours. High grade but BUTT ugly.

Dan, I guess we can all speculate... but I wonder why some slabbed coins tone really bad and other don't. WHat do you think... most likely culperate.... storage conditions?

Well, with that dig next to the date, I'd say it's no better than MS-63, but it probably graded out at MS-64 or better.

By the way, I think the toning on this coin is attractive.

I'd imagine it's a whole array of things, including storage conditions, how the slab is sealed, what was on the surface before it was sealed, etc...could be anything!

 My thoughts exactly. I don't like this toning, so for me, it couldn't hurt if done properly.

The vast majority of them are toned that way long before they are ever slabbed.

Hey Gang, I don't know what made me think of this, but it just occurred to me that I never posted the full pic of the slabbed Franklin half. As mentioned in the OP, I have heard of these slabs, but never saw one. This is one of the old ANA slabs. I don't have any history about this nor could I find any online. Maybe someone who knows more about these can share some info. Oh, BTW.....Rusty nailed it right on...this ugly Franklin graded a 65...Hmmm.
