The Flying Eagle design is one of my favourite U.S coin designs. There is something about it that captivates me. It is simple, yet elegant and very symbolic. Here is my only example of this beautiful coin. I would appreciate your comments. Eduard
I think it is very interesting and intriguing design. It's too bad it is so short lived. I would have enjoyed collecting a 50-year run of them. I do have all three regular issued versions of it, though. If I win the lottery, I'll pick up the 1856 pattern as well. It's fun to dream, isn't it?
I love this design and the Flying Eagle was the coin that brought me into coin collecting originally. Ruben
If you're only going to have one, that's a great one to have! I don't think I've ever had one run through my hands that was any better than EF.
Your coin appears from the photos to be the 1857 type of 1856 OBV. It is quite rare in AU/MS like your coin appears from the photo. The "O" of the word OF is squared and the top part of the F comes down to a 90 deg almost touching the next serif. Very Nice!
It's coins like these, the mercury dime, the walking liberty half, and many other beautiful designs that really make me love collecting coins.

Very nice, Eduard! I was thrilled to find one in AU58. The eagle design is one of my favorites and the cent will have to satisfy me until I find a Gobrecht dollar I can afford (probably never!)
I love this short lived series too. Is there any other U.S. coins with an eagle on the obverse? I can't think of any, but my memory is starting to fail me.
Nice FE. There were so many varieties of the 1857 I'm not sure I could give a correct figure. This is a cool site on the topic. http://www.fly-inclub.org/. Rick Snow wrote the book on this topic, actually several books. He has a web site as well and just became the editor of the fly-in club's Longacre's Ledger. To get back on topic Eduard, I like your coin. It looks AU something to me. I'm not really sure it is the type of 56. Here are a few images that might help. In 1857 the hubs from 56 and 57 were used to make many dies. The lettering is how to tell the type. This first image is the type of 56. Note the shape of the O in "OF" on the obverse. Also the shape of all the E's in "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" These images are the type of 57.
