1883 CC Morgan Dollar - Grading Opinions

Hey Frank,

Thanks for this link, it really had helped. I came up with the VAM-3, and every single sign matched up with mine, and none of the others did.

So does this make it more valuable? I have never messed with varieties with Morgans before, so this is new to me

I'd bet against that coin getting in a graded holder as well, BB'd or Genuine Slabbed for scratches.

Shame as it's otherwise a nice enough one.

 

I don't know if they would bag it , but with all of the slides, bag dings on the obv. and on the breast and wings I would give it a MS62. Remember eye appeal counts also. If i picked this up on a brouse floor I would think, man what a great coin, but those bag marks are killing it.

 

If ryan was to send the coin to PCGS or NGC it probably would be returned body-bagged! However, he could send it to ANACS or ICG and they will certify and grade it and include the attribution.

You are very welcome! I believe you are 100% correct that it is a VAM-3!

Yes, in most selling situations, the coin as a VAM-3 is worth more than a normal 1883-CC Morgan Dollar of the same grade and look! It really depends on what your coin grades at, in what holder (slab) it is in and the market at the time you sell the coin. If you scroll down to near the bottom of the page at the link I provided, two auction prices realized are shown. The 1883-CC VAM-3 is not one of the Top 100, Top 50 or Hit List 40 coins as so many specimens...especially BU specimens exist. I think that the values will gradually go up with time and as more and more Collectors get into collecting Morgan VAM's which have been and still are hot items to collect! I CherryPicked an MS-63 1883-CC VAM-3A which was in a GSA holder a few years back and resold it for about 20% more than the going price for a normal GSA 1883-CC Morgan Dollar in MS-63.

Wow, thanks so much Frank. I never really payed attention to all the VAM stuff, but over the past few weeks, I have gotten into so many varieties with coins such as Large Cents, Bust Halves, etc.. and now Morgans! It is all very interesting to attribute them, as well as fun.

I am deffiantly going to keep this, and not planning to sell this anytime soon. I would probably prefer it raw, as most of my coins already are

I would not bother sending it in just keep it raw. I think it's not a Vam 3 ,because the eight is not double along with the dash under the eight if it is a dash. Are you sure the dash is raised if it;s not it's a bag mark ,that happened to fall it the right area , you also have a mark to the left of the one and serveral other small ones on the field that are simular in nature.


The image under the eight doesn't looks like a dash at all, since that coin has so many bags marks i would be skeptical about that

Then even through it is the vam 3 the premium won't be that high ,because i don;t think it's in the top fifty list so it may bring the value up slighty like 5 bucks maybe. I would just keep it raw and label it has a possible vam 3 maybe.I would say they will also bag the coin if you decided to send it in

Hey, I appreciated your input on this.

The pictures I had provided are very poor, and hard to tell from that angle. I looked carefully for all the signs the website provides, and all of those are on my one too. I may take pictures later to show you, but for right now I don't feel like whipping out the camera again

 

Ditto. This one took too many punches to the head, Ryan, to go much higher than 62. If it gets body-bagged, I give it a distinguished service medal, for all the hell it went through in that bag. That reverse does rate a 64, based on those two pics, too, IMO, at a minimum.

 

Hi ryan I just want to get a little technical here I indicated in red the areas on your coin that appear to be hits little specks .



Notice the one under the eight which seems like a hit also compare it to the ones i indicated in red it's simular just like all the rest of them in the field of your coin the little specks I don't need better pics it;s just obvious to me. Your coin is so badly scratched that's why it's obvious to me I also supplied a pic of the vam 3 dash under eight compare the two and you will see .Now this is just my opinion.

The other hits on the coin are different from the dash under the eight. I tilted it to an angle where you could see clearly that it is on top of the coins surface, and not in it

 

I'm starting to think I was too high in my 64-65 grades , I thought the pictures were accenting the scrapes on Libertys' cheek because of the size and brightness , I'll say MS-63 . Still a nice coin .
