there's only one way to find out the op could submit it to anacs unless there are some local dealers near by the op if it is real it could easily be a $400 coin i would not buy a cc that pricy without proper authentication this one is still most likely a fake but it could be a big pay day if real.
$870 similar example but very overpriced on the bay/ circulated certified examples have sold for $300-$500 recently only pcgs-ngc no anacs
So is it just me or are the c's on the anacs picture different than each other? I see similarities in this coin but that could be trying too hard to see.
The Cs are punched individually, so they can be at different heights or rotations. What bugs me about the OP coin is the blurry detail on the obverse and the fat lettering on the left reverse. It also has that cleaned AU look that fakes tend to have. I'm going to say no real.
Yes, i am viewing the fat T and the serifs and side to side with a picture someone provided the details don't match up. Fat parts of letters probably is not a common mint error lol
Also first glance, fake. I think it would help to do the reverse. When you have a rare, high demand coin that is often faked, you should start out thinking that it is fake, and try to find the reasons and markers why it is real. Have you weighed it? That very first step can save a lot of leg work.
I voted fake. Look at the stars on the obverse and how undefined they are, especially the points, compared to a real one, even in circulated condition. They look "mushy" for lack of a better term. To me that's one tip off.
So i can't weigh it unless i send the money, which would be the value of the coin pretty much. And i would have to trust the sender to accept returns.
Thanks to this coin forum and answers like yours i won't be taking this chance. Although it would be nice to invest in something this was a chance i won't be taking. Better luck finding one in an ebay roll...just kidding
I'd have fallen for it. If it's a fake, and I'm not saying it's not, it's a good one, as far as they go...
I passed on this coin thanks to comments like yours and others from esteemed members. Saved me a few hundred. 325 was the saddling price
I don’t understand the market for circulated 1885-CC dollars. I know that the supply of them is limited, but how can you justify spending that much for a circulated coin when you can buy a Mint State piece for only a little more?
