Not too long ago I mentioned I purchased some coins from Harlans' current Buy or Bid. Normally I don't play around in the deep end area of ancient dealer$ but 3 coins struck me at decent deals for the price. The first coin I will share is a Hostilian Antoninianus that is an upgrade to a previous one I owned. I have since sold the coin to another dealer, but you can view the old post of it below. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/on...lian-tetradrachm-antioch.359118/#post-4421114 I was attracted to this for 2 reasons, the better weight & the almost jet black silver with some light silver devices. Circ Cam as @lordmarcovan coined ages ago. There may be a few who are put off by the chipped edge, but in hand, it really isn't that bad and of course, it had to happen in antiquity since it's just as toned. It feels so much better to hold than my old light weight one. I'm very satisfied with the upgrade. It also has some provenance. Hostilian (250 - 251 A.D.) AR Antoninianus O: C VALENS HOSTIL MES QVINTVS N C Bust radiate, draped right. R: PRINCIPI IVV - ENTVTIS Hostilian standing l. holding standard and spear. Rome Mint 4.16g 22mm RIC-181d (S), C-34 (4 Fr.) Ex. Jonathan Kern, ANA Show, 19 March 1998. Ex. Harlan J Berk Buy or Bid Sale, #213, Lot 312
That’s a sharp coin, @Mat. He is one of my missing emperors. I’d be happy with that coin as well. Nicely done
