Let me share my Canada dollar purchased last weekend in Meriden Connecticut. I bought this coin before the book so please provide your honest comments. (Of course, you’re probably going to tell me how I blew it on this 1935 impulse purchase). This coin has the look of an MS but in my hand I believe it is AU58. There are a few hairlines in front & behind the Kings portrait. Someone did some wiping in this area years ago but apparently they did not wipe the whole coin. I think these obverse field hairlines are right at the threshold of being market acceptable but I don’t intend to slab it. I’m thinking that it might fit nicely in a Canada dollar type set. With your help, a Canada dollar type set may be one of my next projects. Perhaps you Canadian coin experts can tell me more about assembling a basic Canada Dollar type set. It would be nice to know from your experience which dollars are needed, what is common, & what is special. Very best regards, collect89
Yes, Very nice coin. In that condition I would estimate it is worth around $35. It does appear to be AU. Below is a link to Canadian Dollar type sets. http://www.islandnet.com/~kpolsson/coins/canada/can1d.htm
Yes there are 30 coins to the set. The early years are the most expensive. It really depends on the grade you wish to buy. Any of the coins 1968-present are worth face value and can still be found in change here in Canada. Unless you are buying a high grade Slabbed coin, I would not pay any more than a dollar for EF-MS63. 1936 is comon and a mid grade coin is around $15-$20 Back in the silver issues I would recomend buying a 1937 for the first group. The 1938, 45, 46, 47 Are some of the more expensive and can range between $100-$600 in a mid grade coin. 1939 is cheap. 1948 dollars are scarce and start at $1000.00 So I would recomends a 1950 or 52. All the other coins from 1949-1967 are not that expensive and are worth in the range of $6-$60.00
