I am eagerly waiting for this event/ just got my catalogue. I will be most interested in the medieval Low Countries/ France. John
John, They sent me a copy earlier this week too . I don't know how they managed to stuff it in my mail box without damaging it but they did . The catalog is 547 pages & must weigh 2 lb. I'll be bidding on several lots but I'll stay away from the Ides of March aureus knowing you'll be bidding on that coin . This looks to be the most important auction of the year & certainly the most important auction ROMA has put together. I noticed in order to attend the auction in person you must adhere to a strict dress code , how British of them.... Below are photos of some of the highlights, click the image for an enlarged view . Sicily, Naxos, Tet., c.460 BC Sicily, Katane, Tet., c.405-403 BC, signed by Herakleidas Sicily,Syracuse, Tet., c. 410-395 BC Bruttium Stater, c. 380 BC Domitian Aureus, Rome, AD 88-89 Julia Domna, Aureus, Rome, AD201 Probus, Aureus, Rome, AD 281
Best of luck to both of you. There are some impressive pieces in this auction, including those pictured here.
Please, masters, can you teach me your ways of being able to afford these coins... I spent $30 on a Sev Alex sestertius and nearly didn’t go through with it...
I've got a couple targets there, but we shall see how crazy it is! I LOVE this coin but its out of my league, what a beauty!!
Is it jacket and tie? Or is it just mask and social distancing? I am a Londoner, and in normal circumstances I would have not missed it, but under the current situation I will enjoy the auction in front of my computer screen with a bucket of popcorn. I don't drive, so it would take using lots of public transport to get there and the London Underground is probably not the safest place to be with Coronavirus around. I will not be bidding on anything I am afraid... Everything I like is way beyond my budget. I have the feeling we will see some amazing bids!
I will not even follow the Roma XX auction on the internet : too painful ! And Hopefully, I will not have any money left after the Leu auction this weekend (fingers crossed) Q
I'm sure a Punic craftsman didn't engrave the dies for this coin , it looks like the work of a famous Greek artist .
I was browsing the listings last week. What a stunning collection of beautiful coins. Good luck for those with deep pockets! I think it will be needed.
I would loose out on the stupid "dress code" I like the way, I dress for work/ Merrill running shoes/ flectarn camo pants/ T-shirt (if its below 16 celsius) Here in Canada/ that means no shirt from May till yesterday (it was 25 cel.) I am still ahead by a wide margin on my three Medieval beauties We Germans do not like to be told what to wear!
They have some amazing coins on offer, some of which they purchased from the NAC spring sale. However Roma's high starting prices pretty much scare me off!
I wonder how many wealthy hedge fund managers and other Wall Street types collect coins. Or CEOs of big corporations.
I’m looking forward to this auction, as well as the Leu auction. Can’t wait to see what the Brutus aureus hammers for....hoping it will go to someone on this forum. I second @Only a Poor Old Man .....I’ll definitely have some popcorn ready!
Donna, Good question . It's not uncommon to see a consortium of buyers invest in a single coin, especially American coin rarities, but a hedge fund manager buying a rare coin for his clients seems unlikely. Most hedge fund managers are very conservative.
