I have been doing pretty good lately until this coin came up.. I have been unable to zero in on a proper reference on, but very close, my main stumbling block is who I believe to be the Goddess Tyche but without the turret crown that I keep running across, as one will notice by the reference I have listed below, I want to also make sure that I have the correct lettering for this coin, so if those who are familiar with this coin type can help out, that would be nice.... 20mm / 5.10gm Below is the closest referance that I have found: AE20 of Caesarea, Cappadocia; AD 43. KΛAYΔIOC KAICAΡ, laureate head right / ETOYC KAICAΡEΩN Γ, veiled and turreted bust of Tyche right. Sydenham 58; Mionnet VIII, 3.
I wouldn't be so quick to assign this to Caesarea in Cappadocia; it certainly shares the style of this coin from Caesarea in Cilicia, like RPC I 4084. Note also that RPC says, "See now B. Tahberer, A Series of Coins from an Uncertain Caesarea, NC 175, 2015, pp. 47-55 where it is argued with good arguments, mostly stylistic, that these series were struck at Mopsus between AD 45/6 and AD 50/1, during a period Mopsus called itself Caesarea, though 'one can only speculate as to why the change was so short-lived' (p. 53)." I think you should submit this to the editors of RPC so as to have it added to their database of coins from Caesarea in Cilicia.
Maybe just a strange reverse double or triple strike, which "removes" the crown . This seems to be an obverse AND reverse die match. https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coin/281821
Yes, I have located a few similar as what you are desplaying, however none without crown on top...? I do wonder if the crown just did not imprint with the strike, however it looks to me to be a fairly well defined image with vail only, I just would love to see another example out there??? Thank you for your input!
Thank you for that paper reference, I think I have resigned myself to the conclusion that the turret crown simply did not imprint or has worn away. I submitted this coin to RCP and received a response after their review, (thank you for your feedback regarding a mysterious coin of Claudius. This coin looks a bit like RPC I 4084 but I'm afraid Andrew Burnett and myself agree that the details, in particular on the reverse, are wrong:, style of the figure on the reverse impossible... Sorry about that.)
