How can that be with all those Morgans that come out of the Mint Bags at the mint a few years back. Ruben
Does this mean 90% of all coins (including current mintage) or just collectible coins (or maybe ancient coins)? I need clarification on this because 90% of all coins ever minted is alot of coins!
Lets see I'm collecting for forty years and I must have went threw thousands, and thousands of coins. I would say I came across maybe two that were clearned so what percentage would that be none I think there's something wrong with that figure or your not specifying what coins , but all world coins is pretty absurd Jazzcoins Joe
I sorted through a jug of wheat cents the other day.... a few thousand of them. I don't recall a single one that was cleaned. So I really have trouble with that ninety percentile figure. That would equate to 900 out of every 1,000 coins. Just too hard for me to believe.
I think they mean collectable older coins- obviously not modern coins. I think "cleaned" means dipped in general, but I am not sure. People with more knowledge would have to comment. I think many heavily toned coins, have been possibly dipped or hairlined and toned over so nobody can tell unless they remove the toning. Just MHO.
Looks like a lightly cleaned AU-Unc. It is unnaturally glossy that almost looks lacquered (common in the brass industry to prevent tarnish). It's worth what you paid, but trying to get this is plastic will result in disappointment and also having more money invested than it is worth.
It is impossible to grade from pics. Based on my experience with Lincolns and photographing them, it looks original and UNC. We are talking about an $80 coin here, any money spent will be a risk. My guess? 62/3 RB at either PCGS or NGC.
hahah. thats strange considering you can grade lincolns blind folded and if he says 62 i say 64 he tend to undergrade his lincolns by a point or two ask all his raw customers thats the reason they keep coming back. i would buy my lincolns from AJ if i were you its difficult to find a dealer who under promises and over delivers
I was talking about US coins and no, modern coins (defined as those struck post '64), are not included. And yes, the term cleaned does include those coins that have been dipped. Some experts will use numbers like 70% - 80%, others will say 80% - 90% - it depends on who it is. Now if you want to talk about problem coins - those thta have been harshly/imporperly cleaned, altered what have you - the numbers almost universally quoted are that 80% of all collectible US coins that are not slabbed by a reputable company are problem coins of one kind or another. And yeah, I know, you're gonna find those numbers hard to believe too. You know why you find it hard to believe ? Because you don't have the experience that those people have. Most people don't even recognize a problem coin when they see one.
If those percentages are correct... well, that does amaze me. But you know something... I was looking through the eBay listings for large cents, and it seemed like at least 80% of them appeared to be cleaned. I remember back in the fifties cleaning coins with a mixture of sodium bicarbonate and water (boy, did those coins shine). Thanks for info!
I find it rather ironic that most people come on this forum proclaiming their original coins only to post a cleaned or recolored coin, but now this guy comes on and calls a nice original lincoln cleaned. The wonders never cease. All IMHO.
"This guy" happens to be me (sidebar: someone should post a forum on how people speak more unkindly in cyberspace verses face to face). If you met me face to face you wouldn't impolitely refer to me as "some guy". I felt this coin was cleaned because in the obverse pics the coin has the "halo" effect, i.e., there is no cartwheel luster. My local dealer, whom I trust well, and who has an excellent reputation among longtime collectors where I live felt strongly it was overdipped. Some others have as well, felt it was cleaned (read through all these posts), so it's not black and white. I started this thread in a friendly manner. If you disagree you can state so kindly, but I take offense to your manner of speaking. Sorry to be so direct Mr Leadfoot. I wonder how many who post here have met face to face? I think both Spock and Dru need to as the post they were fighting on is an example of cyberspace antagonism. It's easier to be rude to people you don't have to face. I don't say this in any spirit of antagonism. Just my honest observations.
