Many of you may have seen the recent Exhibit post by Fisch on the die progressions of 1804 half cents. Excellent work! I leant a lot on a series i am not very familiar with. I did not want to clutter his excellent post with these two 1804 1/2 cents, but i would really appreciate it if anybody could confirm the attributions, and (as far as my lousy pictures allow) offer some grading comments. Thanks and regards, Eduard
Check them against the ones on this thread. http://www.cointalk.com/forum/t45705/?highlight=1804 As always, I love'em! :thumb: Ribbit Ps: I see you saw that already. I'll try and attribute them and will post it later. :goofer:
your photo's are never poor. I love them. Wish I could answer your question but hopefully someone will give you a good answer. Ruben
For DBHC's I use CoinFacts. They have pics of most of them and if it happens to be one they don't list, then I use Heritage. They had the 8 & 13 and the 13 was easy to attribute since it was stemless. It took me a few more minutes to find the 8 but there aren't that many so it never takes long. It's not like a 1794 LCC. :goofer: Ribbit
I'm no good at grading these early coppers , haven't seen enough of them to knoe weak strike from wear , But I like them both , and the bottom is a beauty that I would guess ExF-40 . rzage
I would tend to agree with Mark. I think the reverse tells the tale. very nice details and I can only assume the obverse has a (typical?) weak strike. Very nice. :thumb:
Very nice Eduard. The others have correctly attributed them. Wouldn't it be nice if they were large cents instead?
You are right there Leadfoot! But i like the half cents as well, they have a charm of their own those little half sisters. And, i have their big sister as well to keep them company.. Eduard
The attributions are correct. Your C8 is a really nice coin, details of VF20, net VF20 - no terribly distracting marks and very nice color. You C13, on the other hand, I would call 40 details net 25 or 30. The color looks unnatural or just weird. I'm not sure if it's been cleaned or if there's something else going on with it (the display on my phone isn't the best) but it doesn't show a nicely as your C8. The C8, by the way, always comes cracked through the tops of LIBERTY. Those cracks progress through retained cud to full cud in various die states and make an intersting little collection in themselves. Thanks for sharing them!
Actually, I think both of them look really nice. I would say XF-45 weak strike for the bottom one, and VF-20 for the top.
Once again, thank you for your comments. The C8 is actually better in-hand than the picture shows. The lighting just wasn't right, and I just could not manage to take a good picture of it. Thank you all! Eduard
Yeah, I think people are underestimating the detail on the bottom large cent. I have an AU example with more ribbon detail and slightly more hair detail, but looks really complete, just shallow.
