Always check the "cull" tray! 1904-S Morgan

Somebody missed the mintmark on this coin when they put it in the "cull" tray at a local bullion dealer. I'm not sure what they saw to bump it into that category (this seller has a cull tray at $26, a pre-1921 AU+ tray at $28, and a BU tray at $45). There appears to be a die crack through the F in "of" as well.

I *always* check the cull tray, and feel vindicated tonight. How would you grade this? What's the nicest thing you've found recently in a cull or junk bin?

Could you please post photos of both sides of the entire coin properly oriented and taken directly over the coin. (Not slanted). That would help to make it easier in trying to guess the grade. Thank you.

Wow. From what I can tell, it looks 64-ish, though the photos are not ideal for this determination.

I see it as AU55. It is a really nice clean coin.

The lighting is terrible that way, and you can't see any of the lustre. But, sure.

Yea...great cherrypick. Even in high AU you've got an $800-$1000 coin.

Major whoops on the dealer's part, but maybe they are essentially OK because they bought it for silver value anyways?

I'd keep the dealer in my regular rotation from now on too. :)

As for my 'cull' or bargain bin finds of greater or lesser value:
    • Two UNC 1950-D Jeffs for 50 cents each
    • A clean XF 1934 Peace dollar in the $20 each bin
    • Japanese 500 yen coins in the 8 for a dollar bin
    • A 1951 Great Britain penny in high AU/low UNC for about 70 cents
That's all I can remember at this moment.

The coin store must have had a high school kid working there for you to get away with "stealing" a coin as beautiful as that one. You must have run out the door as soon as you paid for it before the store owner got back. WOW!

Anyone want to see the rest of the cull bin finds that day?

My thought is that the dealer was checking for CC's & forgot to filter out the key date S's.

XF details cleaned it my guess. Maybe AU.

Sweet find! I haven't had much luck with junk bins, best I've ever done was a VG-F 1924-D SLQ.
