Found this roll-hunting. What would cause the bottom of the "8" to be filled in? Looking at it from the side, it appears that the bottom of the "8" is slightly higher than the rest of the number. And is this just an oddity, or does it have any extra value? I normally like my coins uncirculated-shiny, but the toning is kinda kool.
Die chip, one of the members here shows one regularly, calls it Lincolns Handbag or something similar
It is definitely a Die Chip. That's @cpm9ball Lincoln's Purse Fixed @cpm9ball This was posted before my coffee!
Agree with die chip assessment, if it was a plating blister, you’d think more of them would be present somewhere on the obverse. This pre-supposes the coin weighs 2.5 grams. ...Spark
A lot of times the metal post that forms the center of a letter or number breaks away taking some extra die steel with it like a tree does when it is uprooted.
I guess I'm the oddball. What I see is, not a purse, but an old style lock (without the keyhole). Perhaps my age is showing. No matter, nice find!
You see alot of these blob/die chips on wheat cents of the 1950's. I found 100's of them when sorting thru bags of Wheaties 40 years ago.
