I believe this is Doubled.. Looks like obverse and reverse.. Of course, that may not be the case here.. I can't pull up pics on Variety Vista.. Any opinions.. The pictures are the best I can do.. Looks like everything on the obverse is doubled.. And I believe it is a large die crack on the obverse as well..
It's very difficult to determine if there is an error on a coin that suffered heavy circulation damage like yours, but I'm not seeing anything unusual. Many, many times, the damage can appear to be something, but it usually isn't. If you think you have a doubled die, you should get in the habit of checking the following sites to see if you have an exact match. www.doubleddie.com www.varietyvista.com Doubleddie.com also has a tab called worthless doubling that explains mechanical and die deterioration doubling. Plus, you'll get to look at actual hub doubling on coins, which will help you learn to spot the real thing (hard to find) from MD and DDD (lots of these out there)
And there is no listing for the 1983 D cent on Wexler or VarietyVista... If memory serves... Don't have access to their sites at moment. ~Rob
hard to tell with the photos but IMHO it's most likely just damage you are seeing and since your coin has seen heavy use and has damage chances are slim it's an error
I realize everything you guys are saying.. The is some machine doubling, but the doubling by the 3 in the date is the best way for you to see it.. Maybe you guys can see these better.. TY
That shows better but I would say the entire date shows wear and what looks like Doubling on the 3 is a form of NAV or no added value doubling. Thanks for better photos.
I know.. I just know what I'm seeing.. No biggie.. TY.. I just have one more question.. I am going to post a picture of one of my best D.D.. I'm just curious if you guys can see it.. I may be going mad..
Finally.. TY.. I'm learning these different things every day but I had started to think I just couldn't tell.. I'm working on perfection.. I want to be absolutely certain.. This has the bubbles and everything but it doesn't look like my 1974..
Patience, it takes a long time to tell the difference. There are many types of doubling. Only one is called a Doubled Die. The others are all forms of NAV.
The '74 looks like camera shake. Wexler has only one DD obverse and one DD reverse listed for 1974, each with clear die markers
O yes, how do I know!! Lol.. I have been doing this for a very long time, just never got technical.. Haha.. Your exactly right, but it's not camera shake on that one.. I have finally figured it out!! The really doubled letting stands much higher out on the coin.. I'm getting there.. TY
I actually was going to post about the 3 initially but just decided not to. What you are seeing is the 3 and the 8 are smooshed down which is just damage. It looks like a something rolled it down as I show in the yellow mark below.
Oh, Okay.. I see what you mean.. I never thought of that.. I was sure at least the 3 has a tiny bit of doubling.. Makes sense!! Thanks
