Just trying to find a straight answer. What composition were the 1977 s and 1978 s ike proofs? I'm looking at a graded one but it doesn't say if it's silver or clad on the pcgs holder. And the "brown ike" box proofs, are they all 40% silver?
Some grading services only put the metal on the label if the coin is precious or if it is "special" in some way. Example: Park Quarters. The silver issues have "silver" on the label otherwise assume the coins are clad. On occasion, a labeling error will occur. No TPGS is perfect.
"Brown Ikes" were minted in San Francisco from 1971 through 1974. All are 40% silver proofs. The only other 40% silver proofs are the 1776-1976S Bicentennial Ikes. There were no further silver clad Ikes minted in 1977 and 1978.
Yes...they were the mint state version and made from 71 thru 74 in SF. The "red" Ikes were a silver set of 25c, 50c, and $1 made in 1976 in SF. Clad proofs were made from 72 thru 76 and came only in proof sets which were also minted in SF. The bicentennial proof Ikes came in a blue box set from SF.
He's the first POTUS that I remember, even though I was 5 years old when he left office. And it's ironic that he's been brought up--the 14th was his 130th birthday.
Ike's are fun to collect and fairly easy and inexpensive to find. I just got 50 from the bank and found two that are AU.and also got a 40% silver Kennedy.
