Welcome olivia. Nickels are a mixture of copper, nickel and strengthening impurities, such as iron and manganese. What is on your coin I don't know.

Is it thinner than a normal nickel?
If so it might be struck on a penny planchet.

A penny would weigh 2.5 and a nickel weighs 5.
That is weird. Take it to a dealer, I am stumped.

It may have been unequal mixture of manganese which caused rapid oxidation. I have no idea....

The coin appears to have been in a fire which tends to bring the Copper alloy in coins to the surface!

It depends on what the "error" may be. Either it was stuck on a penny planchet or it is missing a layer of dye. To tell you the truth, it is probably only worth a few bucks.

    Sorry

Nickels found metal detecting usually have a copper color, don't really know the reason but may be the case here.
