One of my sources :secret: sent me a Icelandic 1962  Proof 2 Kronur in the mail today. I have to make them a offer on it. She may be able to get more..... These proof are so hard to get. Does anyone else have any from 1940 to 1963 ? The ones made after this date are easy to find. I sure would like to know. There were no records kept for these early proofs and the interesting thing about this is that thier is no info about these coins. I am trying to put together a book about Icelandic coins and this is one of the really gray area's about this countries coinage.
Thanks for reading my rant :headbang:

I think I have a pair of 1958 1 eyrir proofs but am not certain. I haven't seen any others of the early proofs. These have squarish rims and are very finely made.

The Iceland coins made since the late '50's seem to have very limited availability. I have a set of the 5K coins in nice choice unc but the other coins can be very difficult to find here.

Offer 3.25 times what an unc costs. They are in my 1988 standard catalog of world coins p755, but no mintage or cost. The 1966 has 15,000 mintage in proof and 1million in unc and the proof price is 3.25 times unc. I would guess with 500K minted in unc, there would be 7,500 proofs for this date based on the ratio of the 66. See if you can get a couple for less, I'm sure you could find someone who would want one.

The newer editions and the '86 imply these are scarce coins and list them at high prices. 3.25 times unc is only about $9.25 and you'd find the unc pretty tough to find nice for that price I think.

The home market for these (if there was one) has probably been devastated by recent economic events.

Krause lists this coin at $125 with the notation that "Values for the 1958-63 proof issues are for impaired proofs. Brilliant proofs may bring 3 to 4 times these figures."

The problem with this is that there is almost zero collector interest in coins from Iceland. If the coin were lightly impaired (PR63/64), I'd pay $40. If gem (PR65/66), I'd pay $80. If superb (PR67+), maybe $105.

I cannot stress how little demand there is for Icelandic coins.

:p Perhaps that's true, but I'm one of those who collect their die varieties such as overdates, so I guess that makes it easier. A friend also collects Iceland BU and proof coins and knows how hard these are to find.

I collect them too but seem to have far more trouble finding them than getting them at a good price. Collectors really need to be careful with what they pay for most moderns and many older coins. Just because a coin is rare doesn't mean it's worth more than a few dollars and just because you never see them doesn't mean it's rare. The catalogs do a poor job of keeping up with the markets and then can get "exuberant" when they do.

A few months ago I might have been willing to stretch for nice examples of these but with the new conditions it might be a lot riskier.

By the same token though things will normalize eventually and rare coins will be even a little rarer. At that time it might be almost inconsequential whether you paid $40 or $250.

Hi Kurt Its me I found this site a week ago. Yes Guys They are very hard to find and thats what makes it fun. It does not have to be about the money and how much they will be worth in the future it all about the fun of finding hard to optain coins. Thanks everybody for reading my rant.
