I didnt see a new members fourm (if I missed it, if a mod can please move post) I just wanted to post I have been collecting since I was 3, now 52, was lucky enough to inherit a small few dozen coins from my grandmother and father that collected some. I also metal detect central FL beaches from daytona to vero beach. since I started buying acient coins 2 weeks ago I found out real quick that prob most of the $500 I have spent on roman coins on ebay are most likely fake (they were from Cyprus and Bulgaria) I wanted to join a site where I could get more info and talk with other collectors. I have already started with FAQ before I joined and this seems to be a good place for me. Hope to learn alot here and share what I know. Everett,
Welcome to the neighborhood, Everett! We have quite a few very knowledgeable "Ancients" collectors in that forum, and we also have quite a few metal detectorists such as @paddyman98 . What we don't have is someone who has been lucky enough to find any gold from the 1715 Fleet along Florida's east coast. Maybe you will be the first! ~ Chris
That would be the Introductions forum on CoinTalk. Which Metal Detector do you use?.. I'm a Minelab owner.. CTX 3030 and Vanquish 440. You can share your finds as I do on the US Coins forum. Welcome to CoinTalk
Minlab makes great detectors, I have the Excalibur II. Works great once you figure it out..lol. i jumped in deep with a top knotch one, i have found some crazy stuff with it, no old coins yet, but a gold/Dimond tennis bracket with 24k gold and 41 Dimonds. I got a buddy that is in a club and after a hurricane in late 90s they found 14 gold coins from a ship wreck in vero beach. I find more stuff in parks, by trees is where people bury stuff, I found a small gold st (something) madillion also. I found out alot of my fishing spots on the intercoastal you need permission to metal detect.
Thanks, yeah I figured since the coins I got came from a ebay seller that had 18,000+ sales with 96 positive rating, they would be authentic coins, then I seen the bad reviews were all "not authentic" coins and researched the seller and they are actuall on the "known counterfeit" dealers on the fourm in this site...so I figure the chances of the coins being fake are prob high. I will post pics when I get them. I need to talk with more schooled/experienced collectors to see how they buy acient coins. Do you know if the metal detector member you mentioned is from FL?
I believe Bull sharks frequent those waters, don't they, Everett? I might hang out in 2 feet, but 5 feet may be pushing it after what I saw on my last trip to St. Petersburg. I'm swimming right out to where the water turns a dark blue. The wifey is yelling at me to come back in closer to shore. As usual, her words go in one ear and out the other. All of a sudden these 3 stingray dart out from the deep blue water just a few yards away from me. And then this huge fish comes racing after them. It happened so quickly that I couldn't say for certain that it was a shark.....but it had to be. Needless to say, I went right back in and didn't go out past my knees for the rest of the week. So be careful out in the water, Everett. You just joined here and would hate to lose you so quickly.
Yep I am at coast all the time, I just learned to stay out of the water at night. I was out swimming drunk by myself in about 6 feet of water and a shark bumped me on my side and knocked me off my feet to where I went underwater and that was the last time I ever went in the water at night. It still freaks me out to think about it...all I thought was I am going to get eaten and no one will know what happend to me. The shark hit me so hard I had a black bruse a foot long on my side. I have a pic of a 15foot hammer head in about 2-3 feet of water thats in what I call the kiddy pool at the beach which is right where you get into the water and it gets 2=3 feet deep then a sand bar thats less than nee deep. So for those big of sharks to feed in that shallow of water is crazy but the norm. Those 10-14 foot great whites that swim in ponce inlet and go down the intercoastal river is freaky also...you see them on the boat and you wonder...will they hit the boat and I fall out...you def get your footing and hold the seat like its your best friend for a min...lol.
