I’ve been thinking about it and I realize I have about $150 worth of silver coins... (not face value but technical price of the coins) anyways... I just thought I’d share that with CT
Well, yes and no! They aren't worth $150 unless you sell them for that amount. I have about 500ozs. in silver medals, the largest of which are 4.55ozs. each.
Off to a great start. The best advice I received was to buy the book and then to collect what I liked. It's not always about what it's worth. The enjoyment of the hobby is the true value.
.......and most buyers will not pay full melt value. That is why it is better to simply state the total weight. The Red Book lists the weight, in silver, of every coin, and I find it best to memorize these weights. There aren't that many.
I simply use .73 and .78 for US coins, (halves down, and silver dollars respectively). Close enough. I ignore 40% etc since they are always worth much less versus melt. My suggestion is to "collect" junk silver. Pick through boxes and try to get some collecting pleasure if you can. Still buy based on silver price, but its fun to pick out a set of silver roosevelt dimes or franklin halves for melt. I might have 5 rolls of roosevelts that are sets, (I usually tossed in extra 49 S's since a set is 46 coins I believe). Something to do besides just building a "pile".
