The one I have is fully functional. My kids were using it up to about 8 years ago.

Let's get a better view of that solar system bank!

And the brass one on the bottom shelf!

Wow, I remember having a bank like that when I was a little kid. Lost it a long time ago. Wish I still had it.

You can still get them, both vintage and reproduction, on eBay for just a few bucks . . . .

Here is a 1950-1960's Walt Disney Bank. It separates Quarters, Nickels, Dimes and Cents. Still works just fine.

This is a James Candy Company Pressed Paper Bank. It was a Salt Water Taffy candy container and oncevthe candyvwas eaten it became a bank. The patent number is on the reverse but it dates from the 1950's.

Not mine, but a cool mechanical bank nonetheless - coins get taken away for 'melting' ;)

Only one I ever had was like this. My saintly mom was single, poor and worked harder than five people taking care of me as a youngster. I kept my little coin collection in it and a ten dollar bill I had received for a birthday or something..... One day with tears in her eyes my mom asked me to borrow that ten dollars which I did. I knew we were poor and ten bucks was a load of cash to a poor family...... For fifty years, each time I spoke to her she apologized for that ten dollars. I knew it bugged her deeply so two years ago I fixed up a half eagle on a rope chain and found one of these little safes to put it into and sent it to her on Mother’s Day with a note that the ten dollars was now nullified and never to be a burden to her again. When I went home in July she had that toy safe on her bedroom dresser.

My dad, born in 1921, received this as a gift when he was 2 years old. He gave it to me in the early 50's before I started kindergarten. I withstood many years of rugged play from me.

They don't make things to last like that anymore.
