We get nothing as exciting in change, certainly no silver.

Last time i pulled a 1940s coin (or rather a whole pile of them) out of circulation was back in June 1993, but that was nothing out of the ordinary back then. 1948s turned up regular as clockwork.

Up until 1997 the oldest legal tender coins around were dated 1969 then even they were demonetised.

Now i have to make do with the oldest coins being dated 1971. I quit change collecting in 1993 and moved to buying all my coins at shops.

Hey, I just searched my first box of pennies, all from one person (I know because they had the person's name on them), and I know it had been searched for wheats because there was only one ugly one, but I did get $2.50 in pre 1959-1969 pennies, is this about usual? Also, how many wheats do you guys average per box?

I live in England, but for the past two years I have taken a two week family holiday in Orlando Fl (just returned last week and still suffering withdrawal symptoms). in the space of 4 weeks total, I am amazed at the amount of collectable US coins I was able to find. Perhaps the Orlando area is coin-rich due to people holidaying from all over the States. However, in the space of these two short holidays I have been able to obtain no les than 36 different State Quarters up to the California issue (this figure does include 14 from the Denver mint). SCA dollars 1979P (both wide and narrow date) and 1979D together with Sac 2000P and D. The Post Office stamp machine gave me all of the dollar coins in one load of change this year when I needed some stamps for post cards and only had a $20 note. I have also found the peace, keel boat and 2005 buffalo nickels and was given a 2003 series $2 bill shopping in St Augustine. Many thanks, with change finds like this I will not need to visit too many dealers to keep my USA collection flowing.

    Regards,

    PAB.

I'm going to Orlando next week. Maybe I can finally get some of the D mint state quarters I'm missing from my pocket change collection.

I got a bison nickel yesterday in change, first one I've seen in circulation. Maybe it's one of the dozen I took to work to hand out to co-workers. :D Maybe I'll start engraving my initials on them. ;)

    I still haven't seen a 2004 nickel in circulation.

Its snowing today so I decided to stay in today and go thru a pile of pennys and found this also found one with a missing collar. Any clues what that is beneath and to the side of the D. The D is also to the left of it's normal position. Glad it was snowing or this would of passed unnoticed.

There is something about this that doesn't quite look right - it may be only the pic. But to me it almost looks like an altered coin. Like someone tried to fake a repunched mint mark. The color at the edge of the D on top and in the center of the D underneath almost looks like solder or maybe glue.

Look at it closely with your loupe and see if you see what I do. As I said - it may just be the picture. If it is - then you have a neat find ;)

I compared this with another 83d and the mark on the right is where the D should be, it looks (the definite D ) to be about 1/16 of an inch to far left. Took another look and the extra mark is copper, and the e in e-pluribus looks kind of strange. Maybe I'll send it in to coppercoins and see what they say. Thanks.

I didn't doubt that the 2nd D was copper - but using your pic, look at the left edge of it. See that bump that is silver colored ? Now look at the orginal D - see how the center of the D looks to be silver colored as well ? That could be zinc where the original D was scraped off or solder that bled into the hole when the 2nd D was added.

But if this color is only present in the pics - and not on the coin when you look at it in hand - then I would agree that it is an RPM. I can only base my comments on what I can see.

Hah! I'm some what color blind so I can't see the sil. color. I'm by no means an expierienced variety collector and will have to rely on others opinion in that area. What got me into looking for them after coming across some odd looking coins lately. I've got a very odd quarter I would like your opinion on and will flip up a picture in a few days. By the way A few wks. ago you recommended that I send my prf. set to NCG well thats were it's headed, a dealer told me that it has corrosion. Thanks

Well join the club lakebreeze - I'm not an experienced variety collector either. I just read a lot ;)

I hope all goes well with your Proof set - hopefully it was sent to NCS first for conservation.
