Went metal detecting yesterday here in Michigan. Got permission at an old home site and had some pretty good success. In one hole there was the 1943D War nickel, 1951 rosie, 1934 walker, 1942 washington and finally a 1946 wheatie. That was fun. Also got the two Indian head and some more wheat pennies, the oldes was 1913. I like the two gilted buttons found as well. Fun time out.
Nice finds. Old home sites are good. When I was very little my grandma gave me a walking liberty half for my collection. I sat down on our cistern top plate. It fell out of my pocket and I never could find it. My brother and I were digging in out back yard and found a 1886 V nickel. I can see that many people could lose coins around the house.
Great pocket spill, there! Or perhaps it was a kiddie cache. The presence of the two buttons makes me wonder about that. The buttons look like they could be late 19th century- what do the backmarks say? I can't quite make it out. I've dug multiple silvers out of the same hole a few times, but usually not like that. My best was five dimes in one hole (both Mercs and silver Roosies, plus a 1940s nickel, which was not a War nickel). Congrats! I'll bet that was an exciting moment.
Great haul ! I have one of you Buttons . It's called " The Stand of Grapes" button . Expensive in it's day . Their made of Very good Brass ( two piece ) . I used an old toothbrush with soapy water over a few days . See :
I cleaned her up a bit more and she has a lot of gilt. I don't see any grapes though. All I can make out on the back is Warhams coe co Extra Rich.
Detectors and old houses are great. One Christmas in the mid 70's we gave our oldest son a detector. There were several inches of snow and the ground was frozen (Iowa). He put it together and went outside. We told him that is was not a good time. He came back in a little later. He had found an 1840 Large Cent in one of the flower beds.
Neat finds.. Thanks for sharing! My latest detected Walker was 1943. Last year I found a 1942. I feels great finding them!
Down the road from where I live is an area they removed a village to make a dam reservoir. This happened in 1962. The insects are bad in summer and it's frozen in winter but I do have a metal detector I intend to use there someday at old home sites.
