I've stopped most of my subscriptions 2 or 3 years ago. Looks like I need to stop more of them. I'm only getting the basic stuff.
And here I was thinking it was already too expensive... I wonder what a 2020 mint set will cost in ten years.
Based upon the current value of older mint sets a 2020 set will probably sell for less than you pay the mint for it. Typically, you only buy from the mint to maintain your collection. You, don't buy as a investment. Look in the Red Book. They have issue price and current values for mint sets and proof sets.
Very similar pricing to a lot of the international mints, wouldn't be surprised if they started offering substantial discounts to bulk buyers as well. That said they might as well stop making the 3 inch bronze, no ones paying $160 for those
You guys know that I've been a proponent for 'moderns' collecting, but I'm seriously thinking of shifting my venue of collecting to totally Classic Commem.......
Just wait for the aftermarket. They can price them for whatever they want, doesn't mean the after market will support it. Several of the products on the list aren't very popular and also have much cheaper clad options
I quit buying modern commemoratives several years ago. Didn't want to but the mint is putting out too much junk.
Quite true. I like the junk, but the 'junk' is getting too dad-blamed expensive.......there is a school of thought that focuses on only obtaining the best of the best examples. Examples most exemplary. I've been toying with that concept for the past few years and I'm considering going that route. I think they (the mint) have pushed me to the brink. Sell all my junk and concentrate on the finest examples. I can't do both. Up until now I've been able to afford both the 'classics' and the 'moderns' but that day is swiftly ending.....
Yep, I just canceled all my silver products from the mint. Regular proof and Uncirc sets now. I'm done with their prices.
I agree. I want to finish the ATB stuff and then just do the regulars. Even the mine run ATB stuff can't be found in circulation or even from the mint. The ATB have the "circulation grade S mint" that you can only get from a dealer or in large quantities. Why do they do that, produce circulation grade coins that can only be found at dealers? Anyway, I will be closing most of my sets soon.
I collected all the "burnished" silver eagles as the only coin I have purchased from the mint in recent years. I am glad they are changing the reverse next year- I will have the complete set of the original reverse. I tend to be compulsive about completing things and that gives me "an out". I only collect quarters from change now, and I pay a couple bucks for uncirculated innovation dollars from ebay sellers.
Great idea. I was looking for a way out. I will stop quarters with the end of ATB. I can stop the Silver Eagles like you are doing. I can stop the silver proof sets because the mint is forcing me out with the price increase. I can leave a summary for the kids in the top drawer of my coin vault - "kids, being of sound mind I stopped buying all that stuff from the mint in 2020".
Well, you know how it goes -- the Mint hikes prices, people quit buying in disgust, a few issues sell really low numbers, the Mint discontinues them with low mintages, they become the "new key issue", the aftermarket price skyrockets...
Right. However, in my case, I have been doing this for more than 70 years. And, this gives me the out I need to close my sets and spend some time just enjoying what I have.
Don't be a slave to sets, just get things you like and enjoy and if it fits or makes a set it does and if not who cares. It's much more freeing especially with more modern stuff to just buy things that catch your eye (which could also be world coins or others) than think you have to save for the next set thing that may not even be exciting anymore and more of a just because I always have thing
Thanks @baseball21 I have so very many duplicates and more of the great silver of years gone by. I think I will try to trade some of that to upgrade or fill holes. I don't need to keep up with sets anymore. Just relax and manage what I have.
And then the following year everyone jumps back in and buys hoping for a new low mintage key, the mintage skyrockets and they tank in the aftermarket.
