I recently came into possession of a 500 Peso coin from Mexico. At first I thought it was silver, but, no. I still am amazed that such hyper-inflation coinage was so recent (1988) and so geographically near by. My education continues....
Mexico actually had pretty stable money for most of its history. For a different project, I once plotted the silver content of the coinage per peso. Not necessarily a direct measure of inflation, as Mexico was on a gold standard some of the time with silver subsidiary currency. There was a burst of inflation during the 1910-20 Civil War and Revolution, and another one around WW2. And then gradual debasements in the modern era.
I do, though not the 50-million mark. I've got the 10,000-mark, like @derkerlegand posted. Very impressive and large in hand, with nice shiny gilt surfaces. My animated GIF needs some work. It's too low-res, I suppose.
Thanks, I spent 12 years detecting here in Connecticut. My dream is to go to England and detect there as well . ( Bucket List )
Been there, did that, got the T-shirt (literally). That was the last real detecting I did. Haven't found a piece of silver since, as I only went out about two more times after I got back, and my detectors have been put away for over six years. I've grown extremely fat and out of shape. Nowadays I get sweaty and out of breath just opening my mail. But the last piece of silver I dug was that Edward I "Longshanks" penny over there. I've bought better examples of that type of coin for only $35, and I figure that one I found cost me about $2-3K in travel expenses, but the experience of digging it out of an English farm field myself, and being the first person to touch it in 700 years, made it totally worthwhile. Priceless. This is the club I went with. You should totally do it. Not necessarily with them, but with some similar group that offers tours with site permissions and help with legally exporting your finds. It was my #1 bucket list item, too. I'd say, given your Stateside detecting experience, you'd be a natural over there. I found myself outclassed- everybody in my group ran circles around me with their fancy top-of-the-line Minelab detectors, while I was shuffling around with an old Garrett 2500. I was the least successful in our group, but still had a grand old time and found some cool stuff.
Sounds amazing ! I too am getting older and fatter also . I don't even drink either. I'm currently on Oxygen because I have COPD and beginnings of Lung disease . Good thing, I recently quit smoking .
Another thing we (almost) have in common. I was headed down the fast track for COPD myself, when I quit smoking 4 years ago, but quit too late to avoid some permanent respiratory damage. I vaped like a chimney for four years, and then, not too long ago, my daughter got a tattoo, which made me blow my stack, and I relapsed on the ciggies. Can't lay the blame on her, though. The fault is all mine. I'll get back on the wagon again soon. Have to. There's no future in that filthy habit. It was literally killing me, and now is, again, unless I quit, again, and soon. (Never had a drop of booze in my 54 years, though- nor any kind of illicit drugs or anything like that. So there's another thing we have in common.) Apologies to @Wizank the thread author, for straying from the topic. Back to inflationary coins.
