My mother passed away and left me some coins. I found a steel 1943 penny and would like to know where I can take it to have it valued?
Unless you have a particularly nice example (i.e. bright new and shiny), it is probably worth about 10¢.
Cleaning is an absolute NO NO for numismatics. From you description, it is worth about 10¢. If you clean it you might get 2¢ for it.
I think your shiny example may have given him the example to clean it. Please explain to him about what would make it worth more than 10¢ in a little better detail, I am to tired to. :hatch:
Nothing will make his worth more than 10¢, but a lot of things, most notably cleaning, will make it worth less. If he had a new (key word here) one in real nice shape, it might get a couple dollars. If that new penny were nearly perfect (no scratches and nice shine etc.), you might get a little over $10 for it.
Steel cents are not rare nor particularly valuable. Just set it aside somewhere as a personal reminder of your mother.
