  1. I still learning all the coin lingo. What type of error is it if it is one and should I get it graded? I really appreciate your time. Thank you! PIC017.JPG PIC018.JPG PIC019.JPG PIC020.JPG PIC021.JPG PIC022.JPG PIC023.JPG PIC024.JPG PIC025.JPG PIC026.JPG

    DEFDAM - Definitely Damaged
Not a Mint Error of any kind.

    No.

FYI. If it were a Mint Error you would send it to have Attributed and not just Graded. It costs a bit more to do so. Many minor Mint Errors are not worth sending in.

  9. @paddyman98 Thank you. You’re very informative and it really helps. I still have a lot to learn as I’ve only been collecting for a couple of months.

@Jessica Cioffi ...research How Dies Are Made at doubleddie.com. It will teach you to differentiate the damaged coins from those deemed worth keeping...Spark

You need to create your own separate thread. Don't hijack another members thread. Your pictures don't show.

Good thing you're handling the smashed pennies with a pair of plastic tweezers. Wouldn't want to cause any depreciation in value by handling them any other way.

No two post mint damaged coins are completely identical.

All damaged. When you see coins like this ask yourself how could this have happened at the Mint?

Jessica, please remember that late 1982 the mint switched to using zinc planchets coated in a thin layer of copper. Cents dated from then until now have all types of damage. Your coin is losing the copper under the device LIBERTY and will soon start to rot to nothing.
Along with others suggestions above, I suggest you study the actual minting process of just how coins are minted. That should help you eliminate PMD (Post Mint Damage) from possible errors. Good luck.
