Hello All and Happy New Year, I have absolutely no experience with this type of coin and would like your opinion. My wife handed me this coin and said that her mother has had it for some time. She (her mother) remembers her mother (wifes grandmother) showing it to her when she was young. Any thoughts? Is there some way of telling if it’s a fake? Any guesses on the grade? If you have any questions I’ll do my best to get the answers. Thanks for the help.
It looks okay to me. But.......... Then again, I am not an expert on this (or anything except Red & Blue Books) for that matter. Still, those Chinese fakes appeared long after your wife's grandmother supposedly got this coin.
I don't see anything that makes it look fake to me. Being circulated makes it more likely the coin is genuine.
It looks ok from here; but I'm no expert. Just don't try to clean or polish it, that would dramatically reduce the value to a collector.
I am just curious about the length of the eagle's tail, it seems to reach all the way off the coin. I am no expert, all I am going on is the pic. in the Red Book. I think grade wise, AU-55
My first thought was that it looked too well struck. I'd take it to a local dealer or coin show and show it to someone who can examine it in-hand and provide an assessment. Either that, or much higher resolution photos along with a very accurate weight measurement.... Hoep this helps...Mike
No I haven't but I'm sure the local coin shop will do it. I'll bring it there and have them check it out.
No, I have cropped and enlarged several pics of the obv & rev. There are many raised bumps and what look like tool marks that I have circled. These are what makes me suspicious of the coin. Quite honestly, the mint is just not that sloppy.
The tool marks you indicated look typical for a fake... I have a book that exposes all the indications of a counterfeit gold coin... not with me unfortunately. If you cannot figure anything out, I can check in my book sometime tomorrow.
