Hi. I m a new member and also new to coin collecting. I found this 1989 penny in my pocket change. And while looking at it from my mobile magnifier, i found some extra mark ( sorry dont know how to describe it but u can see in pics attached) above the "s" in states in united states of America. Both the t's in the word states also have some sort of shadowing at the top. The "e" in united is also a little more filled. Is this an error? Can it be a valueable first coin in my collection? Looking for some advice n guidance. Thanks in advance!
A 1989 Cent is Copper Plated Zinc. There are issues sometimes with the plating. What you have are Plating Bubbles or Blisters.
Welcome to CT. And welcome to coin collecting, you will find all phases of a coin collecting can be enjoyable. And as you can see one thing about error coin collecting. You can do it every day with just the pocket change you accumulate. I have found since I've started collecting what you decide to keep is a personal choice. I myself have a wide variety of unusual, PMDs, if I like the coin I keep it. I have been asked a lot of times why I keep such garbage coins. One thing I tell people is that the coin is worth at least face value and I have a very interesting piggy bank. And I find if I need a little extra money, I do not have a problem cashing in the coins that I have .But as I have done on many occasions. A conversation will come up on CT about a certain coin and there are a few of us out there that also collect these kinds of coins and can pull them out of their collection to show others. Thank you so much! I m a foreigner, just moved here two months ago. And actually the state quarters and national park quarters is what caught my eye. They are so beautiful. So i was thinking of collecting them all and take them home whenever i go back to my country. And then i came across an article about error coins and since then i have stopped using my pocket change and observe every coin very closely. Already got a wheat cent too! Yes this is such an enjoyable experience. I m just learning about these coins and now I m sure that with the help of the members of this forum, i will have a great time collecting different coins. Welcome to the USA. One of the things that makes American coins interesting is how many years the coins have been legal tender. A 1793 cent could still legally be spent as a cent. We have not changed or demonetized coinage (except gold) for all those years, and you find some interesting stuff in circulation. Such will not be the case for our modern cents which many call Zincolns. Where are you from?

Welcome!! I too have a few PMD's. I generally keep them in case I need to refer to them to compare to other coins if I am not sure about something. It's a good way of learning.
